Japan without a CPD
 

Hello!

I am on the first stages of a RTW trip and I am currently in Ulan Bator.

I had a big breakdown here and I was stuck while the bike was repaired, but now I am ready to leave.

My original plan was to go to Magadan from here, but I don't trust the bike so much after the breakdown and I would like to stay on a more BMW-friendly route (BMW r1200gs) just in case I have more problems.

So after eliminating Magadan from my plan.. I find myself with an extra couple of weeks and some extra money in the budget, and I thought to go to Japan before sending the bike to Vancouver from there.

Currently in the Oasis, in UB and there are a lots of bikers here. After talking with them someone said that he read here that it is not impossible to ride in Japan without a CPD.

I don't have a CPD with me, but I could get it delivered from Spain. Although I would like to know if any of you got through Japan without it. Is there a way to do this? Did someone do it recently?

did Japan without CDP last year.

You need to take the ferry from Khorsakov (Sakhalin Island, Russia) to Wakkanai (Hokkaido, Japan). There the japanese customs will not ask for the CDP and allow the temporary import.

Check �n�[�g�����h�t�F���[�@���K���E�當���E���K ���@�k�C���@�t�� for timetable and prices.

You will need to go from Khabarovsk to Vanino and take the boat to Kholmsk (Sakhalin Island). On the last 300 km to Vanino the road conditions are mixed between gravel, tarmac and construction sections.

This is great news. I think I can get the CPD sent to me by a friend, but if I can avoid it, I will!

Actually I prefer the route through Shakhalin so this is perfect :)

Are you totally sure that I won't need a CPD there? Maybe things have changed since last year? Or you were just lucky?

I cannot speak russian, so any help in Vanino is welcome. So yes, please let me know the details of your contact there.

Enter at Wakkanai via Sakhalin, and you will not need a Carnet.
Do NOT go via Vladivostok or Korea (too expensive anyways).
I don't have time right now to go into the reasons some offices require a carnet and others don't. But entering at Wakkanai is your best choice. Note that the ferry ends for the season on September 27.
