A great deal of stress could have been removed if the family had known whether the person was insured and by whom at what id a very stressful time already. I think it was Sam Manicom on Adventure Rider Radio that suggested getting all of your paperwork in order and have a family member with power of attorney just in case.

Also, keep a copy of all your docs digitally where a trusted family member can access them. That way not only do they have all the reference numbers to hand but they can send copies to the relevant people if needed.

This has come in handy for me in a non-emergency non-travel scenario :D
