Leaving bikes in kenya
 

hi. My friend and I are on a trip from Uk to south africa. We are hoping to stop in Kenya and store the bikes for a couple of months, while we fly home and ern some more cash. Dose anyone know the procedure for this? Or know if there is an african country which this would be easier to do it in (although we've only got contacts in Kenya at mo)

Chris, at Jungle Junction will store them, we are here now they will be very safe, it is an overlanders camp. and there are a number of bikes/vehicles stored here.

One thing to remember is that your road tax when leaving Kenya will be calculated from when the bikes entered Kenya, no matter if they wes ridden or not. It's too tonnes, but you might want to check it out just so you don't get a nasty surprise.

Chris at JJ's is the guy to go to for storing you bike. It's secure and since he has a shop on site you can easily fix any of those 'bike-has-been sitting' problems that crop up.

Hi,

Continuing this question, does anyone have experience of leaving Kenya on a bike that entered the country a year earlier (with carnet, now renewed), and has maybe 11 months tax outstanding?
Are they strict on calculating the charge at the border (into Tanzania)?
Anyone know how much it might be?
Might it be negotiable?
Is there anything that can be arranged in Nairobi beforehand to reduce the overall cost?
(The bikes are at JJ's so will ask Chris as well).

Depending on which border crossing you use to leave Kenya the road tax might not be a problem. If you're going north via Lake Turkana there's no-one at the border to check whether you've paid anything or not.

If you're heading to Uganda use the Suam River border. Customs are there but they don't seem to know about the road tax.

I don't have first hand experience of a Tanzanian border to use to avoid paying, but I'm sure Chris will know if it's possible. Maybe the crossing round the back of Killi might be worth a look though.

I contacted Chris, good to know he's still helping motorcyclists and overlanders.
Since this thread is over 10 years old, any current info on leaving a motorcycle in Kenya for at least 3 months?
I plan on returning and then continue on my journey.
I haven't decided on where I will send my moto from Kenya yet, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I was actually in JJ in Nairobi about 12 months ago, same guy still there from when I was there in 2007 and yes he has a good setup, JJ is now in Karen. Was plenty of cars and bikes in his compound from travellers leaving them there to return.
