Leaving your bike in a country?
Dear all,
I am shortly leaving the UK to ride to SE Asia. However I wish to do some detours along the way to visit various countries. My intention is to leave the bike in say Turkey whilst I fly over to Cyprus for example. Does any one have any knowledge or experience of doing this? The countries that I wish to do this in are - Turkey , India and Thailand. Apart from the security implication , will the authorities let you out of these countries whilst the vehical remains? Many thanks and kind regards , Stuart:confused1: |
If you are using a carnet I don't think you will have any touble leaving your bike as it's not recorded in your passport. I've only done it on a day trip from Thailand into Myanmar (Burma) but longer should be the same except for finding somewhere to store your bike. Even though only Malaysia and Singapore are oficially Carnet users, over the last 6 months I have used mine for Thailand, Cambodia and Laos as well. Makes crossing the borders a lot quicker and easier. I'm heading in the opposite direction and shipping from Bangkok to Turkey in the next couple of weeks. Might see you on the road somewhere.

Shipping from Bangkok
Mate, do some checking up before you ship from Bangkok. I've just done it to Calcutta and it took me just about 28 days to get my bike out of the country. There were a couple of national holidays in there, and my agent didn't really know what he was doing, but I think with hindsight I'd just have shipped from KL.
I'm just going through the process of getting my bike through customs in India, then I'll stick my feed back on the thingy here on Horizons. Check the horizons thingy and get a good agent. Oh, and on the original subject, take your bike to Cypress! It'll be wicked! |
Thanks
Cheers mate.
Many thanks for the info, I will keep an eye out for your post to see how you got on. Stuart |
