Mongolian visa - Australian

Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this. I am looking for anyone who has travelled in the past couple of months through Russia into Mongolia via land. Did you get a visa at the border, or did you obtain one at a mongolian embassy in Russia before you got there?

Reason being I left Australia with more than 3 months before I enter Mongolia which would of meant my visa would be expired. I therefore need to get it on the way somewhere, unless someone is VERY confident I can get it at the border? It's my understanding that I need to do it through an embassy?

Mongolia has never issued visas at the border as far as I know. So if you need a visa you'll need to visit a consulate. There is one in Ulan Ude which travellers often use.
