Carnet CPD Costs as of 3/16/2016
 

Folks, here's some clarity on the pricing for CPDs in Canada and the US now. We are charging US$775 for an application fee. This is charged once we received the application and all the supporting documents since that's when the bulk of the work begins.

The CAA had charged $775 or $995 depending on whether you were a member or not. If we can get the process to be less labor-intensive we will attempt to lower the price. Upon taking it over the process was very cumbersome and the FIA will not allow us to automate it like we have for ATA Carnet. That could change and will if we have any thing to say about it over time. As for the former indemnity program through the CAA it is not applicable any longer for security.

The new security program is called a Loss Prevention Security Program. The amount that is charged to the carnet holder is based on the countries and value similar to the older indemnity program. However, we return 80% of the amount charged once the carnet is satisfactorily discharged. CAA was returning 50% so we have tried to make it more affordable.

There will be ancillary charges as well such as shipping your carnet to you for instance.

FYI we are issuing carnets within 7-10 business days of receiving the application and ALL supporting document.

We met last year at the BC HU meet in Nakusp. I've just finished another US Canada trip to NL and AK which has been amazing.

I'm just about to ship the bike from LA to NZ then on to Uk and Europe in 2018. Before returning with bike to the US in 2019.

I have read much here but am unsure about whether a Carnet is always needed?

My bike is US registered and about to be moved to South Island NZ as a temporary import on US rego.

The shippers (Kiwi Shipping) seem pretty certain that they can do this. I do have the rego plate with me so US customs do t remove it on export and can easily keep the US rego paid.

Am I being naive?

Good to hear you're getting out there to some interesting places!

A carnet is NOT always needed by any means, MANY countries do NOT use it at all, e,g, for ALL of the Americas, NO carnet.

For your trip, NZ, UK, Europe, also NO carnet is required. Australia DOES require a carnet.

KEEP the plate ON the bike - US customs will NOT (read bloody better not) remove it. It's none of their business and they don't care about the registration, and it's a legal requirement for the plate to be on there.

Grant you're a star and this confirms what I believed ...

I have the plate with me and the bike will join me at the ned of the year or early next.

Made st Johns NF and Prudhoe Bay this year which was fun.

Back in Sydney filling the bank account and good will account with family.

New website for US and Canadian CPDs
 

Boomerang carnets now has a website exclusively for carnets de passage which hopefully will help provide better information for users. For inquiries about a specific trip you can complete this online form and we will provide a quote within 2-3 business days. At this time there are two security options. We are working on a third but it will not be available until next year probably.

Carnet for Iran
 

Just a note, the new company (Boomerang Carnets), due to US sanctions against Iran, is currently unable to issue a CPD valid for Iran. After inquiring about alternatives, I was told that a US/Canadian applicant who needs a CPD for Iran can contact other issuing organisations, who will ask for a "No Objection" letter from Boomerang, which they will gladly provide.

My correspondent's recommended contact for anyone in this situation is Sukie Duhaney at CARS Europe (UK), but she said that any other CPD-issuing organization is permitted to accept applicants in this situation (results may vary), with good experiences in the past also from the Swiss and German issuing organisations.

seems like 2 options, upfront minimum 5k USD despoit + fees

other is $2600 fee + application fee of 775 so 3375 total upfront..i assume

in the end when i return the carnet, they will return 2080 dollars

so net price for the carnet exluding shipping inbound/outbound is 1295 dollars

That SOUNDS BALLPARK correct. Carnets are not cheap. :(

You need to talk to them directly to get it all correct. We don't have any way of keeping track of all the possible fees for each issuer worldwide, much as we might like to. There are generally options and things to think about to get it right. Re-read the Carnet page first! Paperwork | Horizons Unlimited

Why isn't Iran allowed in the carnet for Canadian users?

BTW You dont need an FIA carnet to enter Iran. Simply contact the Iranian Automobile Club and they will charge you much less.

Charging a non-refundable $1000.00cad registration fee for a carnet is extorsion. But I guess it is just the American way of doing things. http://www.atoc-moto.com/forumm/imag...-France-86.gif

It seems that the only reason is that the carnet happens to be issued by a U.S.-based company, and because of U.S. sanctions against Iran, they won't issue them, even for Canadians. It's just too bad that CAA stopped issuing carnets for Canadians!
