It's in French, but with Google translate you'll get the gist Ian |
Just a quick update on the French carnets - it seems from their documentation (I haven't spoken to them directly yet) that they prefer to send a carnet renewal to the local French embassy and you are supposed to go and collect it from there.
Not being French this could become interesting (maybe), and it means you have to be in the capital city (which we normally prefer to avoid). Ian |
Thanks for the Link. I speak french so the language isn't a problem just couldn't find the right sight. That probably would be a headache picking it up at the french embassy.

Update for anyone, like me, who is pursuing the ADAC option and hoping to securing a bank guarantee as opposed to having to shell out the deposit money up front:
Anna from ADAC is almost certain that it will NOT be possible to lodge a bank guarantee if you are not a native German as it requires the stamp of a local German branch as opposed to a UK Bank who simply has a operating branch in Germany. Example: You may bank with HSBC for example, who has branches in Germany, but as a UK citizen you cannot lodge a bank guarantee as the German branches are not in anyway tied to the HSBC UK Banks. Anna also said she has never heard of a UK Citizen securing a bank guarantee with ADAC. Not great having to put up 6000 Euro from the trip fund in order to get our 2 Carnets! Uuugh! I will try to talk to the HSBC Business Enquiry Line to see if they can perhaps set up something with the Frankfurt am Main Branch as Anna said that they so far have been the only UK Based bank to have offered a bank guarantee for ADAC, albeit to a German Citizen residing in Germany! |
Can you get the "value" of the vehicle lower......? Talking to many Germans on our travels they seemed to have declared their own valuations.

There is a lower deposit amount of 1,500 Euros if you wish to take a Carnet that Excludes Southern Africa, India, Egypt, Iran and a few others. No use for us as we are looking to include India, South Africa and Egypt on our trip. Might have to shell out the 6,000 Euros in the end. I'm going to talk to HSBC Business Enquiry Line to see if there is ANY way for them to agree to take out a bank guarantee at all. |
Adac
Is there a direct link to the ADAC carnet department ? Thanks

Australia
Australia works on the insurance premium option as I have been doing it that way for the last 7 years.
Cheers Paul |
So, is there anyone who has gone down the ADAC route recently? Anyone any idea of the processing time as well?
|
So as I understand it, Im looking at paying a THREE THOUSAND EURO deposit, even though my motorbike is a 1996 honda cub90 valued at 500quid.
Thats a third of my budget for the entire trip (looking at doing london to japan) There has to be a way round this!? Its basically torpedoing anyone who wants to travel on a budget? I was hoping to leave in the next 3 months and am getting the paperwork together now. |
I am a Kiwi on a French registered bike, I hold a British and Australian passport though... does this mean that I HAVE to use the French carnet, or I can use ADAC too?

You say motorcycles. But I presume the valuation scale you detail applies to all vehicles and not just bikes? I operate an overland truck for commercial trips in West Africa, and will need to renew our carnet around September 2016. We used to get the insurance indemnity option through the RAC, which I understand is not available through the ADAC. With that in mind, and knowing I don't need Iran, S Africa, Egypt and Iran, do you think we can get away with a €1,500 EUR deposit to get a CDP? In addition I presume the actual carnet fee is on top of this? Thanks for any information! |

I'm pretty sure that the rules state that if there's a carnet issuing organisation in the country in which the vehicle is registered you have to use them. That's why we in the UK were stuck with the RAC! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Dave, You need to look at the ADAC website, there are different scales for different vehicles. In our case (Unimog) I've just stumped up 5000 Euro deposit for Africa excluding Egypt. It's still better than the RAC because it's a deposit - Ie you get it back if you don't do anything untoward. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
