I just visited the ADAC website and downloaded the form. It appears that as I only need the CDP for West Africa (ie category 3), I can get away with a €2,500 EUR deposit - so all in all it could be worse. Hopefully that won't change between now and September!

I was going to go for the 2500 Eur option this year as we're not intending entering SACU, but as our plans usually shift massively we decided to keep that option open.

I sent our application on 27th March with a request for it to be ready by 28th April. On their website they ask for at least 4 weeks notice.

Anna from ADAC has confirmed by email that it should be with me by then. Seems a great improvement over the RAC!

Everything was sorted easily and I've refunded my ADAC carnet also

I am looking at getting an ADAC Carnet for Iran.

Iran is 500% so the carnet amount is quite high. Too much for a cash deposit.

What other payment options are there today ? Insurance ?? Bank guarantee ???


€295 for the Carnet Document so is fair enough.

I, along with a German friend a couple of weeks ago in Hamburg enquired about a CDP with a UK address, the people at the ADAC were very friendly and made a phone call then informed me they will not be able to issue me one.

Well I guess that answers that question..

Looks like we have to use cars.com in the U.K now.

Here's an update for those in the U.K enquiring about a Carnet.

I asked for a carnet price for Iran which is 500%. Bike value £1000.

If your bike is worth £5000 then you should probably multiply everything by five.

CARS.COM:

" Your carnet will take 3-4 weeks to issue. However, we are able to offer an express service if the document is required sooner (fees apply).

There are two fees associated with a CPD Carnet:

The Issuing fee which is dependent on the number of trips you wish to make,
£210.00 – 5 page document,
£225.00 – 10 page document
Or £250.00 – 25 page document


Your non-binding quote is based on your vehicle valuation of £1,000 for the following countries: Iran

OPTION 1 - Security/premium fee: £700 of which £250.00 is refundable once your carnet has been successfully discharged.

Just been looking at exactly what you are asking re ADAC had some good replies just now on FB group "Overland Sphere". I guy on there offering help too. Seems you can still get one from ADAC if you push hard enough. Sounds like it depends who you deal with as in many of these situations. Looking at the ADAC website indicates the deposit is €3000 for value up to €7500 which is more useful for many people.

The more I look into Iran the harder it seems for a British passport.

A guide is mandatory and expensive. That will ruin the whole experience :thumbdown:

Iran's been on my radar for a couple of years now but the obstacles do seen formidable. It does seem slightly ridiculous that when you clank to a halt at the border waving your UK passport you'd have to shell out for a guide whereas, arriving directly behind you and showing an Irish passport, I'd have no such restriction and could just ride off (unless things have changed since I last looked).

The other thing you'll have to come to terms with is the subsequent restriction in your ability to visit the US for five or so years under the ESTA system. You'd have to apply for a visa and convince them that you're just an innocent adventurer. As I'm currently in the midst of a batch of US bike trips that's a issue I've had to take on board. At the moment the US trumps Iran in my plans :rofl:

The Cars carnet cost is just ludicrous - about £750 vs £250 from ADAC and would be a deal breaker for me. That £500 would pay for most of the fuel for the trip. I've no idea how Cars.com work out their rates or whether they have any obligations to provide carnets but that looks similar to Amazon dealers pricing a £2 paperback at £1000 to put people off.

It's a classic case of the great British rip off....... They've got you over a barrel haven't they. Once we leave the E.U. and loose all our rights, you can only expect it to get much worse. But hey, at least we can have bendy carrots..

Why Iran treats us with such contempt is a historical one.

They call us "little Satan"... At least were not the "Great Satan". That's reserved for the USA.
