Re-Classifying A vehicle
Hi Guys and Gals,
Ive found the information Im after through searches, but was wondering if anybody can tell me if the following is a particularly arduous task? Currently buying a Mercedes 1617. Obviously classed as HGV on documentation. But, Im putting a body on the back which will be able to carry people/passengers. I want to re-register this HGV as a bus for carnet purposes and because road tolls are cheaper and it makes crossing borders so much simpler and quicker. Anybody here experienced a time frame for re-classification, and if so was it problematic? Very expensive? Many thanks for all your help. |
Dave I've done this the other way round as my truck (now registered as a motor caravan) was originally a bus in Germany. You'll probably get the best info on the Self-Builders Motor Caravan Club website SBMCC Self Build Motor Caravanners Club but you may have to register/join to be able to search the site. Basically you need to be able to satisfy the DVLA that the vehicle should be re-classified and that usually involves doing the necessary work and then getting the vehicle inspected by the DVLA to see that it has been done. Sounds simple but you can be sure that as there are umpty Construction and Use requirements for buses it won't be at all straightforward and what's more you might need type-approval and God knows what else. I suggest you pop down to your nearest DVLA office and ask there.

Thanks for the reply Quintin I will check with DVLA.
All i know is that the overland companies like Kumuka, Oasis, Accacia, ATC, Dragoman etc.....they all buy HGVs and build bodies for the back then reclassify them as buses. So it must be possible. Hopefuly the DVLA wont charge a forune to do it! Thanks again. |
Dave the DVLA don't charge anything or anything significant so don't worry about that. As it happens I know someone at Dragoman so if you'd like I could get in touch with him and put you in touch. If that would help send me a pm though I won't be around for the next week or so.
