Renewing Canadian Moto Registration

Ive been riding out of Canada for more than 18 months now and am getting ready to return from South America. My registration has expired and I need to renew it so that when I arrive in Miami I have the REAL month and year sticker on my REAL license plate. I believe I also need it to be registered before I can renew my insurance.

My concern is that the government of Alberta may not renew my bike´s registration unless I´m there in person. Does anyone know if this is true? I´m hesitant to ask them directly because that may just raise a flag and make it more difficult. I would like to just have a family member mail in the payment and receive the stickers, which they could then mail to me in Miami, but since it isn´t simply a yearly renewal, I don´t know if that´s possible.

Thanks,
Daren

Rego and Insurance

Don't know about Alberta, but in BC attendance in person is usually necessary. Our rego and insurance is handled together through ICBC though, so if you get one done you get the other.

I would think that a letter of authorization along with a photocopy of your drivers license and relevant documents taken in by a close family member should be enough talk them into it. If they still give you grief, people have been known to "update" your own rego papers and use them until you get close enough to do it yourself. Customs likely won't care too much. But like you, I am a bit more sensitive when getting to North America, those dang people have computers that are actually networked to something:).

Renew on line

In Alberta you need to have valid insurance before you register your vehicle. As vehicle registration in Alberta is mostly a money grab the provincial government has made it fairly easy for you to give them your money.

You can renew your registration online

Service Alberta:

Give a relatives address and they can forward the stickers to you where ever you happen to be.

Have fun

Thanks for the advice guys. Yes, you're right Rick about needing insurance 1st (I always forget which came 1st, the chicken or the egg).

I peeled off the outdated stickers a long time ago, because of course it doesn't matter down here in South America, but it definitely matters when I start riding in North America again. I do have a fake license plate with 'modified' date stickers that would probably get me back to Canada, but I'd hate to get stopped in North America with that. I (stupidly) did not renew the registration last year with a simple mail-in process, and now that it has to be renewed after a year without, I'm worried that now it won't be so easy. I'll take a look on the site you sent for more info.

Cheers from Brazil,
Daren
