Riding Australia to Ireland in September
 

Reasonably fairly quite stupid at these things, what sort of travel insurance would I need for the myself, I have registration and bike insurance for the year in Australia though not sure how good that is once I leave kangaroo land.

any help would be appreciated

The only thing that is valid is the registration - whilst you must pay the insurance even if the bike is out of the country. Once you get into the Green Card Zone you can just buy the insurance and you are covered. Elsewhere you will have to buy a combination of insurances at borders or just do as the locals do and drive without insurance.

For yourself, a travel insurance, that covers you also, when you ride a motorcycle with the cubic capacity, that your bike has, covers your medical costs without an upper limit, and also covers, if your condition requires a med-evac flight to another country for better treatment. And must naturally be valid for all countries, that you plan to go to (some crisis areas could be a problem). But be sure to check all these carefully from the terms, before you buy. And then there´s also all valuable items, that you´ll carry with you, those should be covered by your travel insurance. Compared to the possible costs of a major medical emergency, that is a minor worry, unless you happen to have something really expensive with you, like professional TV equipment. But anyway it´s something worth checking.

For your bike, your current insurance is usually only valid for the continent, where you live in. And it does get more complicated, once you go outside Oz, Europe, US, Canada and a few other “western” countries. Usually you can only get a basic 3rd party traffic insurance, that, depending on the country, is either required by law, or not. You buy it at the borders, or first town inside the country. Probably no-one can tell you, if such insurance would actually work in reality, unless you have an accident. Even in the best case, compensation limits are probably very low. And it does not cover you or your own vehicle in any way. And most locals won´t have insurance, so it would be almost impossible to get any compensation from them, no matter what happened. Sorting out a major traffic accident with the local police and judiciary, when you don´t speak the same language, and it´s obvious you have more money than the locals – good luck with that! So rule # 1 is: don´t have an accident, and especially don´t have one, where other persons, or their vehicles

Don´t mean to scare you with what I said above, most travellers have a great trip, and get home without any such problems. But it is good to think about these things, and accept the risk, before you go.

so tell me is it a good time to start organising visas and carnet for end of September????

For carnet, definitely start right now, contact the AA in your home country. Visas, at least find out, which countries you will need it for (which route are you planning to take BTW?) and next find out the types of visas that you can get for each country, and will you be able to apply for them, while on the road. For example Pakistan, some nationalities nowadays have to get that visa from their country of residence.

my plan is a flight to Kuala Lumpar with my bike from Darwin Australia, then riding North through Thailand doing some exploring for a month maybe longer then a flight to New Dehli were I will spend a few months here touring, from there I ride Pakistan all being well on the visas and Iran then turkey and so on,, any views on this???

For a start Ben. I doubt you can fly your bike from Darwin to KL

I tried that return path from KL in April but there are no wide bodied jets doing that service. You may need to choose Perth or Brisbane or other capitals to get the bike to KL

I had to fly KL to Brisbane to get home

mmmmm that's put a bit of a spanner in the works there!! lol ah well ill suss out something over the next few days, my visa is up in September and ill be in Darwin for the last day might have to check out other places could end up doing a full loop of Australia that'd be fun
