Swiss Passes
 

Hi Guys

I am planning to do the Swiss passes this August. I have seen a few sites and there are several passes. I am struggling to make a plan. I think Andermatt could be a good starting point. I am hoping to ride from Middlesbrough, UK.

Many of you would have good experience with the Alpine routes. Please help me plan routes. I am hoping to spend 5 to 7 days in Switzerland.

Andermatt is an absolutely ideal location, smack bang in the middle of half a dozen passes and right next to the 'big 3' of Susten, Furka and Grimsel. I had a week there many years ago in my BMW M Roadster when I was attending a rally of BMW Z cars (Z3s, Z1s, Z8s and the M version).

A great source is the ADAC map MR6 'Schweiz' which is put together for motorbikes. I've had a hunt on the Internet for it as a download but can't find it. Ultimately I could photograph my paper copy if you can't find it online. Give me a shout if you would like that.

Indeed - Grimsel, Susten and Furka passes are the ones we justifiably are attracted to.

That said, I would encourage you to not only do these passes (which can really be done in one medium-long day, if you get lucky with weather), but also explore the Italian, Austrian and maybe even Slovenian mountain roads - all much friendlier to spirited driving, not to mention much cheaper to stay at...

Andermatt makes sense, really so does Interlaken - also consider Kandersteg as a cheap rural option with a very cool alpine slide at the end of the valley. You can take the car train southwards and catch the eastbound road towards the passes.

On my trip (years ago), I started in Kandersteg, rode all the way back up via Interlaken to Grimselpass, then via Furkapass all the way to Feldkirch, and had enough time in the day to explore Liechtenstein.

Andermatt is a good base for 2 nights, then spend 2 nights in "Graubünden".
On the way to Switzerland you can ride through the "Jura" (view from the "Chasseral"), not like the high alpes but nice.

That's helpful Tim. I am also considering bike rental in Bern or Zurich rather than riding all the way down from Middlesbrough. Do you have any advice on rental?

Hello everyone!

You made a excellent choice, for me Andermatt is one of the beautiful places in Switzerland.

I have my own motorcycle here to make routes, but one friend of mine rented a very good motorcycle in Moto-Tech.

In their website don't say nothing about rentals but if you call them or send an email you can rent a Kawasaki or Ducati motorcycle for a good price.
