Travel insurance for overland trip to CapeTown
Good afternoon everybody.
I am after some current names of providers for insurance that would cover my upcoming trip through Africa. I plan for a years travelling by motorcycle ( KTM 950 ). My calls this morning produced these results; Campbell Irvine. Phone call and quoted £693. I wasn't really too confident of their approach, the young lady asked very few questions and wasn't really very helpful. Navigator Insurance. The polar opposite, a very helpful young lady. However they have had to quote £2711. As their underwriter is currently not happy about cover for motorcycle travel. They are searching for a new underwriter as they realise this sort of quote is prohibitive. Worldwide Insure. None of the phone numbers listed are recognised, I am assuming they are no more. So I thought prior to trawling the internet I would ask here and see who is using whom and what experiences people are have with their chosen company. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Zed. |
It might be worth checking the Herts Walkabout policy. The policy is designed for world travellers, including camper vans, etc. The website doesn't specifically mention bikes but it might be worth a call.

Travel Insurance
Try this one:
World Nomads Travel Insurance - Explore Your Boundaries Motorbike Travels are insured as long it's not a race ;-) they even cover extreme sports like bungee jumping and stuff like that. Worked well for me. Greets Claudio |
Cheers,
Bermuda Rover. I phoned Herts Insurance, unfortunately their cover is restricted to camper vans. They did pass my enquiry on to their sister company Adrian Flux, who do deal with motorcycles. However they can only cover for 90 days at a time. Globetrotter. I received the standard web quote from World Nomads of £473. I have emailed them with specific questions about motorcycle travel. We shall see what they come back with. Thanks again. Anyone else? I will put all my results here for people to see and make use of. |
how is medivac covered?
Hi,
Not that you can have an insurance with them (assuming you're not Dutch), but to give you an impression of the costs. I paid €500 for a years insurance at "De Europeese" in The Netherlands. Have a very critical look at how medivac costs are covered. I tried several who covered a search and rescue medivac operation to a certain amount (say, €50.000,-). I finally found this one which covers ALL costs, without a maximum. I think on a trip like this that's far more important than having all your gadgets insured. Hope this helps. Travel safe, Gee |
Here is an Article with severall Insurances for Vehicles:
4x4tripping: Fahrzeug-Versicherung: weltweite Teil- / Vollkasko / Haftpflicht Please report back what insurance you take, and how much you had pay! You can optain local insurances on the borders, but they just cover the opposit party. You have to ask yourself if you need the insurance to cover a total loss of your vehicle, or a big damage or not. Or if you able to do an write off. For shure it is pretty relaxed too, when fire, theft and everything is covered. But you will pay a lot for. Surfy |
Right, I have been away for a few days. this was an email from World Nomads awaiting my return;
Hi John Thanks for your email. If you injure yourself while riding a motor bike you are covered under the standard policy (Level 1) provided the motor bike engine is under 125cc. If it's over 125cc, you'll need to pay a Level 2 premium. At any level, you will need to wear a helmet and you must and have a valid UK motor bike licence. Unfortunately, this policy does not extend to cover you if you are motor bike touring or your motor bike is the main mode of transport. It can't be added, even for an additional premium. Personal liability is excluded while motor bike riding and there is no cover for the motor bike itself. As with all our activities, you are not covered if you ride a motor bike at a professional level i.e. you are being paid or sponsored or if you compete at international events as a national representative or motor sports. Kind regards Jane Customer Service Team WorldNomads.com London SO..... that looks like a no then, I will keep trying. |
