Traveling The Panamerica Highway
Four of us are planning a trip down the Pan-Am Highway departing from Canada in September. Has anyone that's done this trip required a Carnet de Passage at any of the border crossings.
One of the guys read in a travel book it's a good idea to have one even though they aren't required. My position is if we get them and use them at the border it'll just confuse Jose the border guard who isn't used to seeing them. Any thoughts from anyone that has done the trip? Thanks Shewbert:scooter: |
Not required anywhere in the Americas. Waste of money and effort.
Just have current your registration and ownership for the bike, your passport and drivers license. Jose may be working at the border but he's no dummy, all rigged up with computers and all the doodads at the busy crossings. |
It's not required in Central America. I just went through every single country there and all you need is your registration, passport and driver's licence. But you should probably also carry some proof of ownership. I also ran into a fellow who was returning from South America and he was travelling without the carnet as well.

Thanks guys, I didn't think they were necessary and will pass this along to the group.:thumbup1:

Never, no where, no how. They're expensive, too; do your friends know that?
