uk insurance nonresident

So this has been covered time and time again. I've perused the previous lengthy posts about this subject, but was hoping for a more recent clear picture of the how, if possible, of obtaining insurance.

Situation. I'm a US citizen and am currently in oxfordshire. I am planning on purchasing two bikes in Tredegar today or tomorrow. The man I'm purchasing from says their mots are up to date and I believe they both have current road tax. My plan - upon purchase - is to head south through Bristol and Bath and Stonehenge and then to France by ferry. Therefor I would only need insurance for 1 - 2 days maximum.

Can I do this? Also, will I be able to get eu insurance once on the mainland?

Thanks for reading my lengthy post, and I appreciate any input.

Put insure for a day into google and have your credit card out. Away you go.

Bermuda Rover 6 May 2014 15:25

I've been experiencing these issues for a couple of years, as I live in Bermuda, am a UK citizen with a full UK licence, and own a UK registered Land Rover.

After much searching, I could only find one UK insurance company that would provide me with annual insurance for the vehicle (as a non-UK resident), including the standard 3 months of EU green card cover. That company was 2Gether Insurance - but they would only cover limited mileage of up to 5,000 miles. That worked for me last year, but not this year.

I did find one or two other companies by searching for 'ex-pat vehicle insurance'. Whilst they would provide insurance for non-UK residents, they wouldn't cover modified vehicles. As my LR is modified, they were of no value to me.

For my current trip through Europe, Russia and Central Asia (longer than 5,000- miles), I was saved by the Herts Walkabout insurance policy that is specifically geared to persons travelling with their vehicles. Unfortunately for you, they don't insure bikes.

I'm not sure you'll meet the legal UK requirements if you insure for 2-3 days whilst in the UK and then try to find insurance in mainland EU. If the Uk vehicle is not registered as SORN (basically, off the road), it must be covered by UK insurance and road tax.

Registering the vehicle in France appears to be a better option (if you have the time and contacts to organise a re-registration) as the French are much more accepting of insuring non-residents.

I don't thick it will be as easy as just buying the bike(s) and getting a couple of days of UK insurance.

I am a US citizen who bought a UK registered motorcycle.

I insured my bike using rtwdoug's recommendation in this thread:
heres how to get a Europe Green card (insurance) - ADVrider

They cover the bike for EU, including (importantly) the UK. 140 euro for 3 months.

You will need all bike documents showing the bike in your name to get this insurance.

This is no longer a fix!......

For others on the search, I recently (1 March 2016) contacted motocamp and unfortunately, they no longer offer this.

motocampbg@yahoo.com

"Since last year low, Bulgarian insurance company are not allow to do green cards for EU register bikes.
Regards,
Ivo"

But www.lobagola.com appears to be a great lead.......
"Yes our border insurance policy will cover you in UK & Ireland too if you ride UK registered motorcycle. You can check the list of the countries that are covered and which are not covered on our website."
