UK to Indonesia

I have business to attend to in South East Asia next year and thought why not try and bike out there to make it a real adventure. Trouble is I'm not sure where to start. I want to leave in November and I have a very limited budget. The idea is to get there as quckly as possible and then to spend the next 6 months travelling around Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and then ending up in Indonesia. - Can anyone please give me some pointers (I seem to be going round in circles on this web-site - not a good start!).

Many thanks - Johnny

Hi Johnny

The whole process can seem overwhelming at first, and now is not too soon to start planning for next year.

I suggest you start with Chris Scott's book, Adventure Motorcycling Handbook, which is the definitive book on planning a long motorcycle trip. "Ultimate global guide for red-blooded bikers planning overseas exploration. Covers choice & preparation of best bike, shipping overseas, baggage design, riding techniques, travel health, visas, documentation, safety and useful addresses."

You can order it from Amazon.co.uk through this site, from this link. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/books/books.shtml#A

Once you've had a read through it, look through the Trip Planning section on this site, then come back to the HUBB with your specific questions. You might even get some answers from Chris Scott, as he moderates the Sahara Forum on the HUBB.

Good luck!

Jonny,

Having just returned from a ride to South East Asia, one thing you might want to reconsider is your leaving date. November in Europe and the Middle East can be very wet and very cold, especially when you get to any altitude. We left late last September and by early November it was snowing in northern Turkey and Iran and very soggy further south.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to drop us a line - harveyandlisa@hotmail.com. You might find some useful info on our website, it has a full kit list, shipping info, costs, etc.

Best of luck,

Harvey (and Lisa)
