USA bike insurance.
I have a Oregon registered Honda in Los Angeles. I am Canadian with Australia drivers liscence. This trip I am having trouble getting cheap liability ins. in California with my 'international drivers lisence'
The solution seems to be to get a USA drivers liscence, I wonder what states I can do this in without bonafide proof of USA residency status....there are 7 million Mexicans illegaly in USA, SOME of them have USA drivers liscenses. Any hints MOST appreciated! ultspnch@powerup.com.au |
I have never had to show a drivers licence of any kind when getting insurance. But then again I don't have a foriegn accent! You may try haveing someone else call an insurance agent with your info and getting the policy. (they might not pay but I look at insurance as a necessary evil for getting my plate, not something I'll ever get money BACK from)
Come to think of it, they did not ask to see a licence when I got my international driver's licence. Good thing, because Colorado left off my motorcycle endorsement when I moved here from Michigan! |
I got an Oregon drivers license about 10 years ago. Before my green card/social security, etc came through. It's probably still possible.
The theory, as I see it, is that Foreign passports are not considered valid forms of ID. According to the OLCC (Oregon Liquor, etc.) to drink in a bar you must have a us state id. You get that form the dmv, so there shouldn't be much reason why you can't just getting a driving license. BTW, a bike test in Oregon (used to) involves 20 questions on a computer and a figure of 8 around some cones. Have you tried going down to your local DMV, and giving it a go? In my experience, it's really hard to get a decent price on motor insurance w/out a us drivers license. Good luck! |
