Vehicle overstay TZ
Hello,
does anybody have experience with having your car or bike for more then 6 till 9 months in Tanzania and then driving out again. I have heard stories TZ keeps track of entering into the country and that you have problems getting out. Thanks |
Hi Roel,
I stayed with my verhicle almost a year in Tanzania. (Got a bad accident and repair of it took me that time). There is really no problem with getting out of the country. The only thing is that you have to pay tax for every day you have been there. Also you have to pay fueltax for every day. For me they luckily were friendly to cut that away after I showed them pictures of the accident and the repairs. And proving this way that my car has not been driving on the roads for many months. If your car is in storage for that time goto the TRA and get it documented. Because then you don't have to pay for anything ! Unfortunately the guys at the TRA didn't tell me that and when I left Tz at the border they told me about that. Greetz, Peter |
Hallo Peter,
It seems that TRA can be awkward and i do not want to be involved too much. I know of a French couple who had their car confiscated and it took them 1.5 years to get it back. I much rather pay then the roadtax which I supposed to have paid and get on with it. Can you let me know which year you left Tanzania in this specific case and which border you took? Did you travel on carnet de passage? Thx |
Hi Roel,
I have been in Tanzania from 2015 to June 2016. And do live in Kenya right now. The Tanzanian officials are actualy very nice. I have crossed the Namanga and the Tarakea border and they are very helpfull. Also the people from the TRA in Lushoto and Tanga are pleasant. But you need to ask the right questions and you need to know what you need. Tarakea is the most relaxed crossing. Namanga is a pain in the ass on the Kenyan side. They once refused me saying that I only want to enter to extend my Tz visa. And another time I they refused my dollars saying they were to old (2006!!). I travel with a carnet. And actualy my carnet with the entry stamp of Tz was passed the end date. But I had a new carnet starting from that date. The Tz stamp is valid for a year, no matter if the carnet where the stamp is put is still valid. But you need the new one. They will put an exit stamp in the old carnet at the last date and a new entry stamp in the new one on the first date together with the exit stamp you are really leaving. And by the way the road from Moshi to Tarakea is wonderful. And if you want to visit Amboseli in Kenya this is the road to take. Groet, Peter |
Thanks PeterdeH.
