Airfreight from Hamburg to Bangkok?
 

Hi,

One friend of mine has a problem with his bike.
He shipped his bike from Finland to Bangkok via sea freight, but now he got information that bike is stuck somewhere in Hamburg and it cannot go further because it is classified as Dangerous Goods.

I have no idea how he got his bike to the boat in first place, but now it looks like he needs to get his bike transported other way.

Has anyone used airfreight from Hamburg to Bangkok? Any freight forwarded or company you can recommend?

This is Repa´s bike, right? Oh dear ..... I got the feeling, that the agent, that he had working for him (can´t remember the name) may not be up to the task. For example, he has an ATA Carnet for the motorcycle, because the freight company insisted, that it will be needed. I certainly did not need it for Thailand. Or Carnet de Passages for that matter.

I do hope he can get some money back from there, if that shipment is really botched. Now if he thinks about airfreight, Frankfurt or Amsterdam could actually be the places to send from. OTOH, airfreight is much quicker, so maybe it could still turn out okay.

Seems like that agent has been totally unexperienced...

All vehicles are "Dangerous Goods"! As we know, hundreds of thousands of Cars/Bikes/Trucks are transported around the world by container ship every year.

The agent should have known that a "Dangerous Goods Certificate" is required.

Also an ATA Carnet is not valid (or even legally allowed to be issued!) for a vehicle that'll be used on a road.

It would be good to name and shame this useless agent.

Why not rent a bike in Thailand for 5 Dollars per Day? Its great and you dont have all the shiping problems:

Unfortunately I do not have the latest information, but when I hear something, I will post it here.

Just talked with him, apparently this company is now working on it, and the plan is now to send by air to BKK. I don´t know the details of this yet, but he said the schedule should fit his plans.

That ATA Carnet thing still worries me a bit, though... I had the carnet (Cdp, not ATA Carnet) with me at BKK Suvarnabhumi airport, when I picked up my bike. But I took good care, that they did NOT stamp it, but instead of this, gave me their own temp import paper. I tried to tell him that it might be the best not to mention the whole ATA Carnet, as it could just unnecessarily complicate things over there, but I don´t know, if he will do that.

yeah definately dont mention any carnet in thailand all they care aboit is their 30 day white paper. Hard for him not to mention it if he has paid heaps for it though. hope it works out

He´s gonna fly to Bangkok in a few days... and I got the impression that he´s gonna go with the ATA Carnet, I very much tried to suggest that he´d just keep it hidden, unless is asked to show it, but no.

Well, it will be interesting to see, how that goes. Haven´t heard of anyone try to do it like that before. Maybe that (new) freight company know this better than me, and he´ll be through in no time. We should be wiser in about a week or so.

Sent me a very short message, no details but the important bit is he´s got the bike cleared to Thailand now!

It appears to me, that in fact he did manage to get the bike to Thailand with his ATA Carnet.

BUT, this bike is heavily modified, for him to be able to ride it despite some leg injuries. And he managed to convince them, that he will be making some travel articles about beautiful Thailand into magazines, and because of injury, absolutely needs THIS bike, to be able to do that (the bike is what he uses for work, used that to explain, why ATA Carnet).... And it had been a really big hassle, even though he had someone with him, who speaks Thai. Was probably his lucky day. He even admitted, that this method probably will not become a common one.
