Alaska to Russia
Can anyone advise how to ship a bike from Alaska to Russia, perhaps Anchorage to Magadan although I'm not fussy? So far I've heard that I need to ship from West Coast USA to Korea then to Vladivostok. Any advice or suggestions greatfully received.

yes you herd it right.when you get to vladivostok you can then take a boat to magadan i think it is about 600 euro for you and the bike. how many of you are going ? if you have at least to it is cheeper to use a shiping container from seattle to vladivostok. about $3000 .to fly 1 bike to korea is about $2500 then a few hundred to take the boat to russia. it takes about 3 weeks for the shiping container

If I have to go via Korea then I may go from San Francisco or somewhere else further south in the US. Do you know of a shipping agent or company who can advise? I'd like to look at both boat and plane options and see how the time/money compare. I'll be travelling alone so no discount for me!

you can ship it to Korea for about 700 bux from San Fran. Contact a biker called Simon on simon.turco (att) gmail (d0t) com for more info. (sorry not allowed to put email address in plain formal here)

Air freight is also relatively cheap to korea (as opposed to expensive FROM korea). Try James Cargo to get air freight price, but air-freighting bikes to / from the US is a challenge post 9/11 ... since a bike is classified as "dangerous goods". Better to try from Canada for air-freight. Expect it to be 2-3 times the price.

Shipping a bike Vladivostok to Magadan ... expect to pay about 7500 rubles (250 bux) all up. Then there is your airfare, which can vary wildly depending on the season and how early you book.

I am also looking at available alternatives to ship from Alaska to Eastern Russia. My trip is still ways off (2011-2012)

Checking the Korean Air Cargo website, it appears there are 747-400 Freighters flying between Anchorage and Seoul at the current time, May 2010.

Personally, I'd prefer leaving from Anchorage vs. San Fran or other West Coast Cities.

You dont have to ship to Korea, there are companies in Seattle which go directly to Vladivostok. We are shipping this way this june (2011). This is the quote we got:

Which is not too bad if you can find someone to share the container with.
When is your trip?

The company ships weekly to Vladivostok, once a month directly, weekly via Korea.

We have a container going from Seattle in the first week of June .
Ours is a lot more expensive than Jaaty's but it does sail weekly to Vladivostok and fits in with our plans .
We have also managed to get three others to share (5 bikes in all ) so the price is around $750- $800 a bike plus the extras as described by Jatty.
the knack for a cheap crossing is to find someone to share with, we have a little space left if anyone wants onboard !!
The more you have in the container the cheaper it becomes

have you thought about going from Seattle to Tokyo and then take the ferry over to Vlad. much easier to get in when you take the ferry over than carog idrect into Russia.
we did this in 2009. no problems at all.
i have a contact if you need. he has changed company from the original one we used in Seattle to get us over to Tokyo but he is still in the shipping an freighting business.

I am riding with Mark (Bushman) on our RTW.We had originally planned to go from Seattle to Tokyo and then ferry from Japan to Vlad. but we decided against it as we would need a carnet (the only country on our whole trip). We are sending our bikes to Vlad. but we are flying to Tokyo and then we will spend a couple of weeks touring before we go as foot passengers to Vlad to meet our bikes (which take 23 days to cross).
