BMW 650 Dakar Dimensions
Hi guys,
Has anyone got measurements for a shipping a Dakar via plane? I'll be taking the front wheel off to lower the height. I'm guessing the weight to be 200 kg unfueled - sound about right? It's a job I'll be able to do this weekend - but I would like to get my details over to the shipping company soone to get the ball rolling! Thanks Dirk |

My Dakar dimensions are (fully assembled): 2190mm X 1500mm X 910mm and gross weight is: 210kg (with my full panniers, etc it actually weighed 235kg) I have shipped it twice by air and both times the "chargeable weight" based on dimensions was 500kg. For example the charge by Variglog (Rio de Janiero to New York City) in 2007 was: - Freight: USD 1,60 x 500 kg = USD 800,00 - Fuel surcharge: USD 0,50 x 210 kg = USD 105,00 - Dangerous goods fee: USD 50,00 - Valuation charge: 0,50 % of the declared value for carriage (if applicable) - UN code UN3166 - Class 9 The bike was strapped to an aluminum air pallet with 1/4 tank fuel and battery connected both times. It was great to just remove the tie down straps and ride off in NYC. It sounds like you have to crate it? Removing the front wheel might save a bit on the chargeable weight but it is a hassle to reassemble if you don't have a centre stand. Hope this helps. |

If you are shipping the bike un-crated it may be best to leave it in one piece as the airline is going to move it around. If you are strapping it on to a pallet make it as small as possible to reduce the volumetric weight. Uncrated you can save a little by taking the mirrors off, maybe the screen as well, letting a bit of air out of the tyres and compressing the suspension with some straps. If you send it air freight the cost is going to be by volumetric weight. Example, 2190mm X 1500mm X 910mm and gross weight is: 210kg. Convert to cm 219 x 150 x 91 = 2,989,350 cubic cm / 6000 = 498.225 so the chargeable weight is 499 kilos Where are you shipping to? I have two Transalps going to Montreal by sea in a crate, the costs are, Crate - £120 Shipping £430 including collection from my house Clearance charges in Montreal - CN$ 280 Around £700 in total, takes 10 days on the sea and 3 or 4 days unloading in Montreal. I might end up with some storage charges in Montreal, bad weather has ships are running a few days behind, not sure when they may catch up. Steve |

Seems that you have finalized your plans but another option from Canada -UK or reverse is by roll-on roll-off car carrier. One advantage is you can just drop off fully loaded motorcycle (they ride it off and on the ship).
