Bringing bikes into Brazil impossible?
I have been told that it is impossible to bring in a used bike into Brazil. Apparantly there is no permit system that allows it. Does this mean that we cannot drive into Brazil, or is it just impossible to ship bikes there?
Thanks! |

You can drive into Brazil as a visitor with your used bike, travellers do it all the time. There's only a problem if you want to 'import' a bike permanently, or even giving the authorities reason to think you might plan to sell the bike in Brazil. But if you are shipping from Africa and have a choice, Brazil is not the easiest country to ship into. Argentina is much better, with Venezuela a 2nd choice. We got our bikes into Brazil (november1998)by land (from Venuzuala and from Argentina). We did not need a carnet. They made a paper at the border at customs. no problems at that time.
But DO NOT ship your bike from ports in Brazil. The shipping companies and people in the port you have to deal with are very corrupt. Better leave Brazil overland and ship from Argentina or Chile. ------------------ See you on the road... The BikeBrothers Harald and Udo. www.geocities.com/bikebrothers |
