darwin to singapore by ship
Anyone thinking of shipping their bike from Australia to Singapore or visa versa. In june 2004 I used Perkins Shipping out of Darwin, great service and very efficient, only cost $174A one way, and 6 days. My problems started in Singapore, cost total of around $400S and 6 hours plus an additional overnight stay to get my bike through customs, road taxes etc. etc. etc. just to ride from the wharf to the Malaysian border! Next time I will try to arrange a truck on the Malaysian side to freight it to the wharf. Much easier.

Have done the Perkins thing, Darwin to Singapore in 2000 and are doing it again in September 2004. What was the problem in Singapore???? Did you have a Carnet???
What did they charge all that money for??? |

The Darwin/Perkins leg was'nt the problem, only cost me $175A to get my bike to Singapore via container, it took 6 days, and unfortunately landed on Friday arvo, so I had to spend an additional weekend in Singapore, which is expensive, compared with the rest of Asia. (same as OZ). problems began at shipping agent in Singapore. 1 : $45S for paperwork. 2 : no idea on customs etc on bike, no help what so ever. 3 : taxi to wharf $10S 4 : gate pass onto wharf $5S 5 : find right wharf (remember keep your taxi) 6: : paperwork at customs and police (at gate, nearly free!) 7 : no way, taxi $10S into AA for road insurance $140A. and carnet check. 8 : taxi back to wharf $10S get carnet stamped by customs. 9 : one hitch I had'nt got my road tax to ride into the centre of Singapore during the day, have to use ring roads. Had to get back to hotel to get my things! 10 : took the chance, got to the border and freedom! Total of one wasted bloody day and over $400S to ride from one end of the city to the other. better off organising a pick up to get the bikes to Johor. |
