East Africa to India
I hope nobody minds me asking about 4x4 shipping in a bike section.
I want to get to India from Kenya or somewhere in East Africa. I am thinking of shipping to avoid driving, right now, through the Middle East (Should I avoid it on safety grounds?) I know Mombassa has a biggish port but know nothing about companies, schedules, costs and things like container versus RORO and passenger travel with the vehicle. All comment and advise gratefully received. |
Hi, I'd love to hear about any recent experience in this field. I might want to do the opposite next summer/autumn.
Esp. interestind in price quotes, as this particular point of the journey will probably decide the planned route... I have a small car, so I guess a 20 ft container would do it. Thanks in advance! Séb ------------------ Normal cars go to paradise, 2CV's go everywhere! |
Hi Sebch. I have not found out anything since putting this post on the forum.
I do not envy the 2cv traveller but I do admire. Regards Tony |

Tony, I found this post last night about a cargo from Mombasa to Mumbai. It's not too far down the list. Should give you some good tips in case you haven't read it.
I understand you don't envy the 2CVists, but believe me, it's got lots of advantages compared to a 4x4: ever took your 4x4 out of a sand trap just by lifting the front with a friend and shoving the plates underneath the wheels? Ever had the experience of people actually believeing you don't have the money (which was true...) to pay a 35 buck bribe? That's the 2CV touch, and I wouldn't get any other car, although old landies bring some dreams in my head, at night: I love driving legends! Let me know if you've more info! Cheers! You mention a post about Mumbai to Mombasa but I couldn't find a link in your message. Yes, 2cv very romantic. I saw a great one in Bristol UK a few days ago. It was painted in subtle mat military greens and greys with goggle like lights mounted on an minimal roof rack, a joy to behold, a design icon, for sure. I have the biggest 4x4 I could find with huge engine and I intend to kit it out with enough stuff to sink a battle ship. |
Hi Tony, i didn't put a link in my message as teh thread is just below this one in the thread list: called "Africa to India", started by Simon Harby. I'm pretty sure you can find it ;-)!
Good luck! Séb ------------------ Normal cars go to paradise, 2CV's go everywhere! |
