Just for your information, the Japan port will be Maizuru, a city in Kyoto Prefecture. This puts it a bit closer to major cities. I will try to ask customs about procedures once passenger transport starts again.

Last I heard, even the passengers-only ship is not operating. It stopped running before the pandemic, so I doubt it will start again any time soon. Not profitable.
