Ferry Italy-Tunisia
 

Hi!

Anyone have any experiences of going by ferry from Italy to Tunisia. Need to know a litte bit more about the standard of the roads between Tunisia and Marocco. There is need for carnet througt those countries right?

With my motorcycle I took the ferry Genoa-Tunis two times, one with the tunisien company CTN, the 2nd time with the italian GRIMALDI. Each of these companies leaves from Genoa a couple of time a week, so you have a lot of options. You can find the web site of both of them. I think there are ferry also from Naples and Sicily.

I travelled on bike in all the North African countries, EXCEPT Algeria, that is still a very dangerous country, especially on the coastal road. So I don't thing is a good idea to travel overland from Tunisia to Morocco. On the other hand Tunisia and, especially, Morocco are very beautiful countries, so you can consider to visit just these two or even only one of them (Morocco is much better).

We italians don't need a carnet neither for Tunisia nor for Morocco. I don't know if Algerians require it.

GRIMALDI has new and definitely more confortable ships. Nevertheless, the CTN, especially the old ship "Habib", is a kind of myth for the adventurous travellers. The costs are more or less the same. The trip takes more or less 20 hours with the Habib and some 17 hours with the GRIMALDI.
So, at the end, the choice is up to you.

No particular tips. Both Morocco and Tunisia are easy countries to visit (of course the standard of roads, cleaning, etc. is not west european or north american). Tunisia is maybe a little more developed but Morocco is definitely more interesting and beautiful.
