From Europe to Malawi or Namibia
 

Hi all, is there anybody who knows any shipping company or air carrier who can send our motorbikes from Italy (or southern Europe) to Malawi or Namibia?
It seems to be difficult...

Fly to South Africa and then ride there - easier and cheaper.

Thank you for the suggestion, but we are thinking something different: we would go from Malawi to Namibia (or Cape Town, we have to decide depending also on shipping opportunties), by Zambia and Botswana.

Someone of the group doesn't like to ride South Africa for the high level of crime in many cities.

You may still find it cheaper to fly to South Africa and then from there to Namibia, since the direct flights are limited from Europe.

If you ship to Cape Town, you can get to Namibia without ever going near a 'dangerous city' and the route is ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING and you can grab places like Citrustdal, Fishriver Canyon and Namakwaland and the miles of breathaking coast. (And probably see lots of whales!)

I am female and have done the trip on my own many times.

I used Kuehne + Nagel when I moved from Germany to Egypt with all my household goods. Never had a problem with them and they were a reasonable price and professional.

Whit all these contacts, I think I'll can solve the problem at least on one side of the trip (Windhoek, Walvis Bay or Cape Town). If I solve the problem on this side, I solve all the problems:

- if we can start from Malawi, we are ok and we are free to decide to end in Windhoek/Walvis Bay or Cape Town

- if Malawi is too difficult, we can do a little "effort" moving the starting point from Lilongwe to (Nairobi or) Dar Es Salaam, where the shipping is not a problem, and end the trip in Namibia.

Dar Es Salaam to Cape Town would be the best, but we have only 3 weeks and we don't want to run...

An update about Kuehne + Nagel: maybe I was unlucky and I found a stupid employee, but first he told me they don't work with private people, and when I solved this problem he suggested me to call in may-june... Yes, and I'll prepare a trip between 5 african countries in 2 months, waiting may/june without any idea about shipping and price! It's demential!

last year a friend flew his bike (and himself) with the German charter airlines "LTU". They offer airfreight from Munich to either Cape Town or Windhoek. He sent the bike to CT and returned it from WHK. The airfreight was somewhere around 2,500 € there & back. That was for a heavy 1150 GS (plus luggage),

Thank you Vaufi, I didn't consider LTU before as I didn't know they send motorbikes. Prices for people seems to be good, but 2500 € only for motorbike it's not so cheap... But I still haven't other prices to compare, so maybe I'm wrong. Now I'm waiting an answer from a contact I had, but if it's not good, I'll write also to LTU. Thanks a lot!

Just to round it off:

LTU uses their own pallets, so you don't need to organise a crate. This is esp. useful if your return flight is from a different airport than the point of entry - like CT / WHK.

Unfortunately I haven't got any alternative freight information. For comparison: to ship my bike from Melbourne to Hamburg cost me (one-way) roundabout € 1100. I presume the price from Italy to Cape Town won't differ that much. So shipping your bike down and back will be slightly cheaper, but the timing is much easier and IMO it is far safer to airfreight it.
