Helmet as Carry on
Hi,
I am planning a trip in Mexico and want to bring my own helmet. Does anyone have experiences with a helmet as Carry On? Or how do you do it? I am flying with Lufthansa and United Airlines from Germany via America. Thanks Michel |
Search box in upper right corner of this page. Search terms: "Helmet as carryon" (without quotes).
Hope that's helpful. Mark |
Carry om helmet
My route was Lisboa Mimai with TAP
And Miami to Bogota with Avinca. I had paid for cibin bag plus small item. The helmet went as small item without problems. Other airline might have differet definition of small personal item. |
Same story flying home from Punta Arenas with Latam recently. The helmet passed as a personal item.
Happy travels! Enviado desde mi iPhone utilizando Tapatalk |
Short answer, some will but not all. Check with your airline.

I've never encountered any difficulty taking a helmet as a carry-on item into an aircraft.
Just be aware that the helmet will count as one piece of whatever your carry-on allowance is. On very small aircraft (Dash 8 or ATR turboprop, regional jets) you might not be permitted to bring it on board because it simply won't fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. |
Thanks for all the answers, I will try it then. Worst case is I have to take it as as an additional checked bag.

I have carried my helmet numerous times onto various planes (including both Lufthansa and United, among others) and never had a problem.
I check one bag with the rest of my gear, and personal items. I carry my helmet in a lightweight backpack, with other items packed inside the helmet and around it for padding. I put a grocery bag in the top of the pack, with my tablet, neck pillow, and snacks in it. The big bag goes into the plane's cargo hold; I carry on one item, the small pack. At my seat, the grocery bag comes out of the top and slides under the seat. The pack with the helmet inside goes up above in the storage compartment. Easy, and painless....never any hassle, and I don't have to wonder how the baggage handlers have treated my helmet. ..............shu |
Usually you are allowed a carry-on and a "small item" like a purse or sweater. The helmet counts as the small item. If someone gives you a problem at the gate, you say, "okay, it's a hat" and you put the helmet on. Once you get on the plane take it off and stow it in the overhead bin.
Yes, I have done this. They thought it was funny, so maybe make sure you're smiling while you do it so they feel like they're in on the joke. -J |
No problem on Eurowings from Frankfurt to Namibia
When traveling from Frankfurt to Windhoek with Eurowings last year it was no problem in both directions. Nobody even asked, even though the helmets where higher than the official size of the overhead compartments - they fitted in ok.
