Hi

I am plannin a road trip ( sometime in march 2011).from india to singapore ( via burma-thailand-malaysia)

Jus got one issue ( or rather doubt).. is it possible to cross Burma on bike?. As far as i know its possible to enter from indian side but entering thailand from burma is not allowed? Anyone who has already done this, or at least tried it , please submit your valuable comments.

The question you have asked is a FAQ. If you look in the relevant forums you will find that crossing Burma is not possible. Assuming you can get an inner line permit to approach the border, as an Indian citizen you may be able to enter some distance, but I doubt you will be allowed to go far.

I suggest you buy a bike in Thailand and ride to Malaysia. Forget about taking it into Singapore, it's not worth the hassle and expense. Take it back to Thailand and sell it again.

Actually I was planning to do a road trip from Singapore to Bangalore.... on the BMW's 1100, I guess it is possible to cross Malaysia -> Thailand -> Burma -> NE India and then Delhi
There is a permit required from the Burma Govt well in advance,

I dont think he´d actually be the first... but you could probably count with the fingers in one hand the amount of riders, who have succeeded to cross all of Burma.

So the chances are very slim. I hate to even think about the amount of hassle one is likely to face at the border, which is likely to continue for days or weeks even in the best scenario.... and even if some miracle happened, and you are allowed inside, it probably wont be just plain sailing from then on.

Do you have any names/ details of anyone who has succeeded? I'd be interested in reading their stories/ finding out how they did it.

Sorry I dont, but I read about it in gt-rider dot com forums, a traveller (or 2 travellers) who really did it in 2004 or thereabouts... maybe the title of the thread (or part of it) was "the missing link of overland travel", or something like that. Now that I think about it, I´m not sure, if they were actually allowed to cross the entire country, or if they had to freight the bikes thru some areas.

I believe there was also a "rally" (organised by the ASEAN, maybe?) some years ago, that went through Burma from India to Singapore, but I dont think that counts. Big organisations may have much more leverage to negotiate all permits from the military junta.

As an occasional tourist, I really wouldnt get too excited about my chances.
