Japan - USA (California) shipping by air
I'm trying to help two buddies with shipping their bikes from Japan (Tokyo) to Los Angeles. They will be arriving to Japan from Russia towards the end of August, and are looking to continue towards the U.S. around September 1 or 2. Does anyone have a recommendation as to which shipper to use? I tried calling freight forwarders here in the U.S. but I'm not having much luck. Any ideas? It's a RTW trip and the guys will be on a tight schedule (trying to circle the globe in 60 days) and I'm trying to save them some time by at least getting the shipping organized for them if possible. Contact Korean Air Cargo...that's their neck of the woods. Or Korean freight forwarders in LA/San Fran/Seattle.
Why not go from Zurubina(South of Vladivostok) to South Korea? Are they trying to ride through Japan? That might take longer than going through Korea considering the formalities et al. |
I don't think they care if it's Japan or South Korea... They told me Japan, so I've been researching transport from there. For them time is of the essence (and so is the cash), so the fastest/easiest/cheapest option would probably be better. I'll double-check with them if it has to be Japan and I'll post here when I get an answer.

Contacts may not be current, though. I haven't helped anyone ship in a while. Crating can actually be your biggest cost in Japan. Labor prices are high unless you do it yourself which may take time getting materials etc. and be a problem if trying to work on a tight schedule. Note that a carnet is required for Japan. Last year a group of friends from Serbia did a round-the-world jaunt, and were delayed two weeks trying to get the bikes from Korea to L.A. Almost could've bought three used bikes here in the U.S. That's why I'm trying to help these two guys from Croatia avoid those problems if possible. I did a search in the shipping section, but there's nothing coming up for Japan-USA, or I'm doing something wrong... That's OK, I'll try the two companies Chris suggested. Quote:
