leaving bike in India for 5 months,Possible?
 

Hi folks
Still planning (leaving IN July :scooter: !!!)
Iff I enter India with my bike (and a Carnet...) and I want to leave the bike for approximatly 5 months in India while traveling (and renting bikes in SE Asia and australia and NZ)

• Do I have to expect troubles leaving India by train or by air , because I entered WITH the bike in the first place?5of course I have prove of stalling the bike somewhere)
• Do I have to expect troubles when I leave india with the bike (5 months later) because this bike did stay in India for 6 months?
• Does the carnet allows me to keep the bike in India for 6 months?

Have a look around the HUBB for an answer- this has come up a few times. In short, yes it is possible: I left my bike in the Delhi Customs House at the airport.

I need to do the same thing: now in Dehli,arrived from Italy, need to go back and come to Delhi again in 4 months to tour India during Xmas/new year:
how exactely it works? CDP allowed only 90 days entrance for the bike.
I have heard it is possible to get extra 90 day (180 in total) from Federation of Indian Automobile Association - but I think leavign at Custom would be easier, faster, with no time restrictions and -on the top of it- also solving the parking problem: Simon (or anyone else w. similar experience), could you pls tell us more on how u did it? (I can't find it on other threads, sorry..!)

Hello. There are two issues:

1. How to store a bike at Delhi customs?

2. How to overstay the 90 limit of a carnet?

1.The answer to number one is easy. Just take the bike to the custom house. The system is in place. You pay a storage fee (not very expensive) into the bank. There is paperwork, but nothing very difficult. They have a secure garage that has many foreign vehicles in it. People speak English. The whole thing is straightforwards. You do not need an agency to help.

2. I don't know the answer to question two. I suggest you talk to the people who issued your carnet. I would NOT accept the advice of the Indian customs officials without confirmation from your issuer.

The only idea I have is to go to Nepal and then re-enter India. This may give you more time on your carnet. But I really am not sure. You need more expert advice on this question than I can give.

Where did you find the figure of 90 days? All the Indian customs information I can find talks of six months as a maximum stay.

If this is the case - six months - then your problems are lesser, and maybe could be resolved by a quick trip to Nepal.

But, as I said above, talk to your issuer. Try and get a very good understanding of your options BEFORE you talk to customs. This is always the case - in India and elsewhere - as customs operate always in the negative. Their job is prohibition.

first of all, thanks 4 your fast reply!

Ok, noted the limit is 6 months: we had than received a wrong information when left Italy.
This makes possible fro us simply ask help of Lalli Singh for the parking, coem back in Dec. and finish the second part of our trip within the 6 months term.

For other users: option to exit to Nepal or Pakistan and re-enter it seesm not to work as, if the veichle re-enter before six months, it seems second stay is added to the first one and total lenght of time still does not have to be over 6 month.
Ex.1:
Enterin India on 1st. January, leaving 31st. March (90 days in India), exing to Nepal, re-enter before 1st. October (180 days form 31st March): in this case, for second stay only other 90 days will be allowed.
Ex.2: As per above, back coming back to India after 1st. October: than veichle can stay in India for another 180 days.
