Motorcycle - Vancouver to Malaysia
1 Attachment(s)
Hello all,
Looking for some knowledge & advice as normal. We'll need to send our bike from Vancouver to Malaysia early September 2023. We need to head back home for a few weeks in September to sort visas for Asia, so the idea was to sea freight the bike as time isn't a major issue and it would be a huge help to keep costs down as much as possible. At the moment we have one quote for sea freight, the pallet alone is $850.. which seams crazy, maybe its made out of French walnut I'm not sure.. Anyway with the pallet at $850, I'm sure you have already guessed that the total quote will be on par with airfreight costs.. If you read this and you have experience with a decent freight forwarder in Vancouver and or a decent clearing agent in Malaysia, your advice would be greatly appreciated. At the moment we're looking at port Klang as the main option in Malaysia but we are open to options. Thank you all in advance. Best Patrick & AJ |

There is a reason that the pallet is so expensive: It is because wood that is shipped internationally (either as a crate, pallet, packing materials, or dunnage) needs to comply with some very strict international regulations that have been established to ensure that pests, insects, fungi, etc. attached to or within the wood are not inadvertently introduced to the destination country. You may have heard about the Asian Longhorned Beetle - it got into Canada on wood used as packaging material. Having said that, $850 does sound a little high... but be aware that specially certified wood needs to be used, and there are various inspections & controls that have to be complied with before the wood will be loaded onto a vessel or aircraft. Thank you Michael this makes a bit more sense.

Go to your local new-bike shops and ask them if they have transport crates left over from bike deliveries. Some of them might be metal. You might get lucky and they could just let you take one away for free, save them the recycling cost. :)

That's worth a try thank you
