Does anyone have any info on getting a bike to Thailand from Australia. Any major dramas? Cheers Lex

I used Tradelanes to ship a DR650 from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, was very cheap, about $400 or something in May 2008. Very straightforward to get the bike out of Malaysian customs too (needed a Carnet). |
Hi Lex,
If you are looking for the cheapest easiest route I would advise sea freight to Kuala Lumpur, don't attempt sea freight to Thailand as it is a nightmare to get the bike out of customs. If you can afford air freight Bangkok is OK, they seem to have their act together at the new Airport. Officially Thailand does not require a Carnet, but Malaysia does, but that might not be an issue anyway depending on where you intend to go after Thailand. Joyce UK now living in Thailand |
Thanks for the info Mike I'll follow that up .Cheers Lex

Thanks Joyce sounds like sea is the way to go for me. I did the triangle loop last year on a renter .. Eventually I'd like to end up in India , is Myanmar possible? Lex

But that doesnt mean I´d count on being able to cross Burma with a vehicle. If you aren´t familiar with the local ways, do not speak the local languages, so you´re more or less just a regular tourist, who doesnt have unlimited time (or patience) to keep trying, it is very very unlikely. |
