s.europe-egypt by boat
 

a freind of mine and i are plannig a uk-soouth africa overland trip.
Wea re considering taking a boat form southern europe, either france, italy or greece, to Egypt where the 'Arican Leg' will start.
Any help on availability and which would be the best would be much appreciated.

Hi, I have been trying to get some info on this for a few years now and all i can say is that there are no boats that do that route. You might have a chance to get on a container boat

You can sail from Italy to Greece, then from Rhodes(?) to Cyprus (Larnaca or Limassol?) & then possibly on to Egypt.

I remember seeing adverts for sailings Cyprus to Israel & Egypt less than two years ago. I'm not sure if they were just holiday excursion sailings or ferries - worth looking in to though?

you are right there steve they are toutist ferries only .ive been to egypt 27 times in the last 15 years and have always tried to get info on how to get my st1100 into egypt via different routes .yes there are ferries to egypt but they wont let you off if you have your own transport .even with the people and the contacts i have in egypt we cant get past the egyption bureaucracy

Several years ago (1992) we used Russian shipping company which I think was called the Black Shipping Company. They used to run a route from Odessa port in the Black Sea to Alexandria via Piraeus, some times with a stop over in Syria. I don’t know if it still runs but it could be worth checking out. They had an agent in Piraeus and we brought our tickets in Victoria Station, London. They used a crane to load and unload the vehicles and bikes.
Egypt is a fairly difficult to enter with a vehicle, at the time we needed a carnet or return ticket for the vehicle, we had a carnet for the bike. We also had to register the bike to get number plate, and if you leave the country by a different route expect lots of extra paper work.
I enjoyed Egypt, in many ways it was hard work but it was worth it.
