Sea shipment out of Bangkok - anyone?
Has anyone shipped a bike out of Bangkok by sea as of late? The last entry in "shipping" was from 2003 and the company that did it no longer exists.
|
Kevin, I believe most travellers ship by sea out of either Malaysia or Singapore due to much less corruption and hassle. I remember hearing bad things about the port in Bangkok. This probably explains the lack of reports on the shipping pages. Singapore is by far the best place to ship from SE Asia by sea and Malaysia is probably a close second.
Its quick and easy to get down south from Bangkok to KL or Singapore and probably well worth the trip for the shipping. Check on a few quotes for airfreight out of Bangkok also by calling the airlines direct, it may be an overall better deal than seafreight when you factor in the hassles, you may be surprised. Lots of planes fly between Asia and North America these days. Let us know what you find out and good luck. |

I just got a quote for $95/cm for sea freight. About $380. Seems not too bad. I can see the issues... My carnet is not valid for Singapore. And the added costs to travel further just to ship will probably outweigh a benefit, as well as adding a hassle factor. I'll post in the shipping forum when it's all done. |
That sounds pretty cheap, make sure you also factor in the crating/disposal charges and the port charges (at BOTH ends) which add up quickly. Sometimes the agents don't mention this.

Kevin,
did you try Transspeed (-> Shipment pages) yet? They quoted me 200 USD to Los Angeles or Vancouver (Can't remember anymore) by sea (2 kubik meters) last April. Lars |

I'm at this very moment in the process of shipping the bike out of BKK. It will be crated this afternoon or tomorrow. Around $750 all-in. Excluding port costs in Canada. I hope that part is not going to be too expensive.:confused1:
