Shipping Accra -> Cape Town, share?
Hello,
We are pulling the ripcord on Nigeria/Congo due to security, timing, and general discomfort (we're just a vacationing couple, not out to prove that we're Invincible or laugh at danger :) ) and shipping our car to Cape Town from Accra, Ghana. This is likely going to be end of Jan 2017 or early Feb 2017. I am assembling quotes for a 20' container, and the 40' usually adds very little. Right now the quotes are hovering in the 4,000 USD range with freight and customs handled at both ends included, and I hope to work them down from that point. We will use about 18' of the container for our car, but we could scrunch this down to ~15' if needed. If you wish to either stuff a moto and baggage behind our car in a 20' container, or share a whole 40', drop me a PM and I'll include you in our quoting process. We also have quotes out of Cotonou in hand, but they are seeming a little "squishier" on price, and I'm not fond of those games. Accra seems more stable and professional thus far. Plus they speak English, so I can exercise a much stronger vocabulary on the shaisters if they pull nonsense. That said, we're flexible. :D Happy 2017 all! - Mike |

So the website offers two contacts to book this shipment -- one in Walvis Bay (@nmtshipping.com) and Accra (@portside.ch) I emailed them simultaneously to book this shipment, and specifically referenced the vessel I required from the website quoted above. From the Tema side, I was quoted $1,700 for departure port and shipment, I arrange my own handling in Walvis (appx $1000 is all I can find -- so $2700 total) From the Walvis side, I was told they discontinued their RoRo service "some time ago" ... I cross-sent the contradictory replies to the other party and asked for a consistent answer. Walvis kicked the issue up to management who confirmed the line is not operating. I have had no response since from the @portside.ch people, to either clarify the vessel quoted, or to explain themselves. I can't find a physical location to show up and clarify. My spidey sense is tingling. 2 phone calls are unanswered from them as well. I'm giving up, as the savings was only a potential few hundred bucks, and it was RoRo and not a private container. == I have moved the departure to Cotonou since it is $1,000 cheaper. My container ships out on Jan 28 if anyone would like to share. It ships to Cape Town appx 1 week later. I am also up for ideas on profitable things to put in ~4 feet of unused container space for fun and profit from Benin to ZA. :D Appreciate the inputs. If it goes well I will report to the Hubb system and name-and-fame the handlers who are doing everything for me from the ZA side. If they suck, I'll do that too, just loudly. :) Fingers crossed. Cheers, - Mike |
