Shipping bike VIA UPS Feight from USA to Oz
I have searched around and found some very good info but nothing that really answers my questions.
I am planning a 12-24 month trip to Oz sometime around March/April. I have an XR650R that I am looking at shipping from Denver CO to Brisbane QLD. I priced UPS Air freight at $1400 from Airport to Airport. Shipping it in 2 crates, each weighing 200lbs(it's cheaper this way) Has anyone used UPS like this? Not sure if this will work out or not!! Also, Carnets.......:( I have been looking at the ATA Carnet site aswell as the CAA site. They just confuse me! I know I have to have a carnet for all my junk and equipment. The ATA site budgets my cost at around $600. The CAA is at $1240!! I need help!!! ALot of help!! Thanks |
This is the quote for air freight from Denver to Brisbane: 2-150lbs crates. They kind of have you over a ring when shipping freight to Oz from USA. The crate has to weigh atleast 150# to be shipped via ups freight but the max weight to be accepted into Oz is.....150#!! I'll have to make sure they weigh exactly 150#

Hi,
For Australia you need only a carnet de passage wich is valid one year.No documents necessary for personal equipment. When you start in Brisbane (I did 2 years ago with BMW1150GSA shipped in with Wallenus Wilhelmsen (Roll on roll of) be sure your bike is 100% and I mean 100% clean. check even your airfilter. This is for quarantinecontrol and they are very strict. First of all go to customs and endorse your Carnet. Make an appointment for quarantine in same office. When bike is cleared arrange a small truck to get your bike out of harbour. Not allowed to get in and ride out. Transport the bike to road traffic office and get it checked. When okay, pay roadtax. Part of this roadtax is thirdparty insurance for personal damage. When you want complete third party insurance in case of damaging someones property, you can do that in Brisbane too, but I forgot the name of the company and I am currently travelling in SE Asia. Google a bit on internet and you find it all. Visa for Oz. I am not sure you are allowed 2 years. Normally when you under 30 you can get a one year allowance. Good luck |

Thank you for the advice. Basically, get the carnet and I wont have to pay all the import fees that UPS is trying to charge? I do not need seprate 3rd party insuance, just the insurance that comes with the road tax is ok? A working holiday is good for a year but it can be renewed for anouth 12 months. Thanks! |
