I have had only bad experiences shipping by sea. The last time, my bike was four MONTHS late. If you save money shipping by sea, will you spend more waiting for it?
I would suggest you ship by air unless you are shipping home and don't really need the bike in the next year. |
I bet there are a few people who will want to ship bikes home to North America from South America early in ´07, me being one, if anyone wants to try to put together a container full of bikes or similar. I am flexible as to where to ship from, though BsAs and Santiago seem like the obvious choices. Do any of the tour companies do the same thing and might have room for an extra bike or two? I have other bikes at home in the USA, so I don´t really care how long it takes, if it´s cheap.

Gotcha covered
Howdy, How you boys doin'?
Our group will be loading a container in Valpairiso for shipping to Houston on Feb 5th or 6th, I think. May be off a day. We are shipping down a load of bikes for January trip to Ushuaia and back to Valpairiso. Some of us are riding back home, so room is available on the container. Contact Arturo at R2O Adventures---- R2O@mac.com We've done this before, it's not easy, but not too bad. See you guys down south. Curtis |
can get your bike to Houston
I will be shipping 5 bikes back to Houston Feb 5th from Vina del Mar, Chile.
I currently have 11 bikes being sent to Chile for a ride to Tierra del Fuego. I will have room on the container for a few bikes. Depending on ship date out of Chile, expect bikes to arrive Houston mid march 07. Adios R2O |

Keep me posted.
I am currently in San Jose, Costa Rica learning spanish. I plan to head on south around the first of January if I can hook up with some one also traveling that way. If you keep me posted with you location I may be interested in return shipping. If not I would be interested in a team ride back. Need to be back in the states before the end of April.

lanchile cargo april 2007
My bikes are with Lan Cargo right now. We chose to have them sent on April 8th to Los Angeles. Last Monday we took two bikes, suzuki dr50 and bmw f650, to the Santiago airport. They fly everyday to LAX and twice per week to Miami and on to LAX. Here is the process...
1. Go to Lan Cargo and get a reservation. This is just an airbill number. 2. Go to the warehouse at the airport, this was Teisa just down the street from Lan Cargo. 3. Empty gas tank, disconnect battery. They check this. Didn´t have to release air in tires. 4. They put bike on a pallet, and strap it down. Cost... $10.00 for airbill $85.00 for hazardous cargo fee this was for both bikes, but the same charge for only one. $70.00 per bike for pallet, and handling at the warehouse $19.95 per kilo $.35 per kilo for fuel tax bikes were 246 and 226 kilos, stuff was in the metal boxes DO NOT LET THEM CHARGE YOU FOR VOLUME. IF THEY DO THE PRICE SKYROCKETS. AT THE OFFICE THE CASHIER TRIED TO CHARGE FOR VOLUME BUT AN OFFICIAL THEY HAD ASSIGNED TO BASICALLY OVERSEE US ARGUED WITH HIM, EVENTUALLY CALLING MAIN OFFICE AND WE WERE NOT, NOT, NOT CHARGED FOR VOLUME. OTHER CARGO SUPPOSEDLY IS. I asked why it is more sending a bike to S. America on Lan Cargo and the response was just a different tariff. Cost was approximately $1300.00 for both bikes combined. Period that is it as of today..... |
