hi i am going home:palm: after 2 years:funmeteryes: and plan to ship the bike via sea.
today i had a chat with Doree Bonner in uk and they have said it will cost around £720 plus ins of around 130 .at the oz end i will get the usual bollox of quarantine costs expecting around 200 bucks and thats then delivered to their forestfield depot.seems a good price and seem good people.:confused1:

Q he asked me dimensions of the bike and i am guessing it would be around 4 cu Metres??? (its a bmw r1200gsa plus panniers).the price is all inclusive of crating etc.i am in south of france right now so just guessed dimenshuns!!!
i have flown the bike twice in the last two years which have both been pleasant suprises at how easy and convenient but never shipped by ocean.going home so i have the time.
so any info on these people and or other ideas,info abuse or whatever please feel free .bier

Not used the company you are talking about but I did ship my Landrover from Melbourne to UK last year.

The agents I used in the UK were RJJ Freight and they were awesome.
Chinita Riser was the contact I had and they sorted out everything for me. They might be worth a look.I know the organise shipping in the opposite direction.

Does your bike have an Australian Compliance Plate? If not make sure you get permission to import the bike BEFORE you freight it back. I have made this mistake before as has a friend of mine. He shipped a GS from Germany and had to send it back!!

Look up the Department of Infrastructure and Transport in Australia for all the info you need.

My Landrover is being imported back to Aus via Vladivostok and despite having Australian Compliance its still a nightmare!!!!

thanks for that i will have a gander for them.
i know exactly about the oz nightmare it took me nearly 20 months to get my import permit for an australian paid up registrationed bike and am sure there are more silly hurdles to navigate before the fat lady sings.
how much did it cost to send your "rover over?"
reason i ask is i have a 6.5 chevvy diesel (in a nissan patrol in perth) with rooftop camper etc and am contemplating my next trip although i would miss the simplicity of the bike.
did you drive it to vladivostok?

It cost me AUD5500 but I needed a high cube container 2.7m high as the Landrover has a camper body on the back. Smaller container is much cheaper. 2.2m high I think

I leave from Inverness in Scotland on the 4th June 2012 cross to Europe France Germany Poland Lithuania Latvia then over to Russia and onwards to Mongolia Siberia and hope to end up in Vlad 3 months(ish!) later. I've got flights booked to leave Vlad at the end of August.

Then the fun begins getting the Landrover into Australia.......

I live in Perth and have bikes in UK and here.

If you haven't already, I know you will get to a point where you'll be wondering if its worth it.

I've been pondering buying a GS in UK or Australia. Shocking truth here is that the same bike in UK is about 60% roughly of what we pay here. I'm still trying to find out why but its crazy. A 2 year old GSA with all the gear already fitted say 10,000kms is around $25k here. Same bike and fittings etc in UK around $15k.

Look at autotrader.co.uk and compare with autotrader.com.au. We get ripped off here.

hi there haggis,yes i agree with you totally regarding prices in oz.i cannot fathom it out as when the A$ the kangarouble was down, ok i would expect to pay more but it has gone from 50cents to th US$ to over parity now.this is also refelected in europe and the whole world appetite for canadian dollarez,swiss gnomes or the humble kangarouble.
so the same bmw bought should be at least half the current price as it takes less to buy.i assume the same for rice burners from asia.
that being said i think like casinos the house rules favour not the punter and the dice is loaded.
since my trip i have also seen places like alaska and oregon where you may buy bikes tax free at very interesting prices and save all the hassles of shipping.bikes in europe are in the same bracket.just need to break the emotional attachment one gets with your own personally farkled trusty steed and you would definately have more cash to spend on travelling.
i am bighting the bullet and bringing mine home and regard the cost as tax to be able to live in a lucky country.
maybe we can catch up for a beer sometime when i am back due to arrive end of feb .cheers:thumbup1:

i missed that as was on the road.sadly.
anyway myself and bike are back home in perth western australia.
i flew the bike with james cargo.
it took around 8 days and was around 1650 english roubles.all seemed good until it landed in oz when the bureaucrats start there self justifying paper dance.you cant clear it from customs for 24 hours and will only be told this when you have sat in traffic for two hours getting to the airport.so repeat next day.then organize quarantine inspection.
if the crate has been tampered with in any way god help you.luckily mine was intact and i after brushing the wheel arches clean was allowed to wheel it out of the bonded wharehouse.
sadly i discovered my panniers locks had been smashed open and the stainless pins driven from their brackets.not really sure why as they were open so maybe someone in the packing shed didnt know how to open a cam touratech design bmw pannier lock.i have sent photos to james cargo who of course deny any wrong doing and want to blame the airline for accidental damage.if a lock could smash itself then lift a lid and pop a pin inside a pannier box and then bubble wrap itself and crate itself with no outside damage then i would believe it was an accident.....but it sounds like a shaggy dog story .anyway the saga of emails with plausible deniability being the topic.i still got a fkd pannier.
anyway after 2 years and 92000kms its pretty much the only damage incurred to note.
i would still reccomend james cargo but make sure you stay and watch it crated and also insure it!!
sadly i missed the shipping quote above.would have been very acceptable.now should i sell and go back and buy a bmr in uk or usa and never ever ship again!!!?c?

ok back in perth australia.flew the bike with james cargo.it was relatively quick but incurred damage to bike en route and cannot get anyone to take responsability.:oops2:
been home for 5 months:( and the BIG question is.........

hi ,i just flew my bike in to oz.it was from oz.it was registerd in oz.it was a 3 yr old oz bought bmw.
ie.nothing complicated........

my advice ....just dont do it.the communistic leanings of this country and the little guys who are justifying their jobs will make it a nightmare for you.it should be simple but it just isnt.easier to import it to meico or morocco from my experience.sell it there and buy another here and by pass the drama.

Just out of curiosity: did you have your shipment insured?

For me, it was kinda surprising at first, that unless you take a transport insurance for your cargo, if something goes wrong with it, it seems that you may get practically no compensation from the shipping company. They may pay you a very small amount per kilo, so you might be happy, if you were sending potatoes, for example, but very unsatisfied, if you had sent more valuable items!

A whole other thing is, how much should a transport insurance cost. Someone once asked me 4% of the value for it, but I think that´s ridiculous. A shipping agent once said that 1-1,5% might be closer. And a transport insurance may also be something, that nobody even mentions to you, unless you bring it up. The vehicle´s own insurance is not guaranteed to cover this kind of damage either, at least over here they won´t give any cover for transporting abroad.

(But I´m really not an expert on shipping, just wrote from my own experiences, and I may not have understood everything correctly, so those who know more about the subject, please correct my mistakes..!)

yeh the flight insurance is about 1.5% plus a additional fee .i had flown the bike previously with qantas and air transat (mcycle express) all with no problems.the problem was when i opened my crate the packaging had no damage so obviously no in flight damage incurred.this is where it gets wierd as the panniers were unlocked but the pins of the bmw panniers had been smashed out and the locks bent open ...the pins and washers had miraculously jumped back into both panniers?!?!?!
james cargo says it has checked its operations cameras and denies any wrong doing.emirates cannot be blamed as the shipment was not opened or tampered with in any way. unless another miracle happened along with jesus the tooth fairy and pinochio which are all true stories aswell.
i knew the packaging was A ok as the analstralian customs and quarantine people wopuld have dismantled the bike if they thought it had been tampered with.
so i had a badly hammered bmw pannier along with self storage jumping pins that no one admits too.
i bought a new pannier and it would not warrant the insurance excess claiming even if you could get someone to actually front up and admit damage which had to either criminal or stupidity .
so i think insurance is a bit of a blowing smoke up your arse exercise and think iot best not to travel with anything you cannot walk away from without crying like a little girl for the next 7 years(ok ok i sniffled a bit ok).
but i have a new pannier box by bmw designed by touratwat to collect drinking water whilst riding for my next soujourn on my scooter.(what dya mean yours dont leak S^%$£ really)
it hasnt put me off as the good far outwieghs the brushes with the asshole factor(this could be a new reality tv show for charlie to work on??)
