South Africa countries without CDP

Hi All,

I need my bike on some sort of a temporary import permit (TIP) to be based in Lilongwe for 3-4 yrs, Malawi.

Would I be able to ride on my Polish (EU) plates and that TIP around - Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozamb, South Africa etc. - without having the CDP and just on TIP?

Thanks for your tips n tricks ;)

You'll need a different TIP for each of those countries, obtainable at the border each time you cross. Each country has it's own rules, but usually they're free or some cursory charge of $25-$50 USD and valid for varying times, but often up to 30 days and renewable. You'll have to check with each country.

It seems highly unlikely that you could get away with using only a TIP for 3-4 years. You might get away with a TIP for the max duration Malawi allows and then enter a neighboring country and reenter Malawi to "reset" and get a new TIP, but I think after a few months they'd be on to you for that.

Thanks mate for your help. I'll look further, heard there are agents in Malawi that extend the TIP for long...

Five countrie (SA, NAM, BOT, LES, Swaziland) have common tax regulations. You'll need a CDP if you want to visit these countries.

Having said that - some people have managed in the past to enter without a CDP. I'd give it a try. on my trip I had to show the CDP when entering SA and so NAM. The other countries were not interested.

Overland entry can be done with TIP, but shipping in is with CDP.
