South Africa to UK

I need to ship my 1200GS from SA to UK in 2-3 weeks time :-(

Any recommendations? Was going to sea-freight out of Durban, but heard horror stories from a guy recently - bad handling, storage, = corrosion & damage. Not to mention time factor.

Grant - I did try the database but no results!

I shipped a R80GS from Port Elizabeth to Vigo, Spain, on a direct ro ro. 15 days, 1500 euros, bike arrived perfectly. Vigo is not far from Santander (a very nice ride indeed) and there is a ferry to Plymouth.

Do you recall what company you used, or have any contact information.

And how long ago did you do it.

Thanks for any information you may have.

Cheers,

Ian

Try 2Wglobal.com for WW Ro-Ro's I used them from Durban to Zeebrugge (they do Southampton en route) they were excellent and about £1,000.00 Ride safe.

I shipped a bike out of Cape Town at the end of April. I can't remember the name of the shippers, but they are near Sea Point. My girlfriend will remember, I'll ask her when she gets in.

Top notch service, no damage, three weeks transit time, for about £300, including the prices Blighty side. (That was for a CG125 - admittedly slightly smaller than yours!)

The only issue is that you have to crate it yourself. I see that as bonus though. You get to choose what you put it in, and how it is put in. (There are loads of places to get crates from in CT - we got ours from the Honda dealership.) A couple shipped a GS at the same time as us, and I don't think it cost much more than double what we paid. £750 seems to stick in my head.

I'll get back to you on that one.

Hi there guys !!

Quick question... Did that price include YOU as a passenger ???

Regards, Ted

Further to my original query....

After getting 2 or 3 quotes, I used a Cape Town firm to sea-freight my R1200GSA from Durban to Tilbury:

TRG International Transport & Shipping (Pty) Ltd
Tel: 021 511 1875 Fax: 021 511 9233 Cell: 083 261 2145
Email: Michael.Hendricks@TRG-Shipping.co.za

I got a BMW crate off the dealer in Durban, and packed the bike up and delivered it to the docks. But they told me it needed a full timber crate, on the day I was flying home so I had no choice but to pay what they asked. In fact I only knew the cost after leaving the country.

The cost to TRG was RND 7751.12 (£705 then) and £234 at Tilbury, so £939 total. But RND 2150 of this was the crating charge, which I should/would have done myself if I'd known. The total cost would then have been about £743. The crate was pretty crap, in fact it had fallen to bits when I collected the bike! But no damage thankfully.

They insisted I shouldn't put anything in with the bike, but I put jacket + boots in a pannier and no problems.

The whole process took about a month from drop-off to collection. I'd happily do the same again. And obviously I flew home seperately.

Hi. the price doesn't include the passenger. But if you need to ship the bike from ZA (Port Elizabeth) I know the shipping company, and the most important thing, the right family who took care of my bike, put it into the boat and did the whole paperwork meanwhile I was back to Spain. They helped another Hubber, Toby, with his crashed bike. My friend is a van driver who does the Cape Town Port Elizabeth route weekly, so you can fly from CT and he can pick your bike at the airport and put it into the boat.

I have safe parking in North Spain if you need it (Asturias), 200 km away from Vigo, 200 km away from Santander.
