how to fix problems with a datatool alarm
I have a 2003 Thunderbird and it had a datatool fitted. In my opinion entirely unsuitable for touring as I find it a pig to live with. Was sent round in circles between Triumph and datatool trying to get information how to remove it. Reason is if the remote battery dies or anything else happens(like you step on it or it gets wet) you can't use the bike. Also if the unit fails same problem and for all of this it flattens batteries to the extent mine wont go into maintenance mode due to the drain.
So this is the fix.. If you get stuck some where you might be glad of this information. In the process of removing a datatool 3. The plug that was supplied to me has part number T2500396 It connects pin 1 to 2 and 3 to 5. But all the places I have looked suggest using T2500050 Anyway it seems to work. Having been told by Triumph they no longer have the installing or any other information on this obsolete product I resolved today to dig in and sort it. After a lot of procrastination I was in the right mood for it. With a sharp penknife I cut away the insulating tape over where the device had been spliced into the main loom. Only to discover it wasn't. NOTHING was connected to the loom other than the two wires feeding the led to remind you the boxed rats nest was using power. Only the bikes original connector. I had had conflicting information about the shorting jumper so I cut the wires from 3 to 5. Unplugged the alarm and fitted the shorting plug. Starter wouldn't turn so reconnected the cut wire and tried again. As far as I can see all works correctly. Didn't actually start the bike as fuel tank is still off. So basically to steal a bike all you need do is unplug the alarm and fit a shorting link. For this level of "security" you have to live with the abomination. To get the same level of protection (without the battery drain or reliability problems) all you need do is run an extension lead to somewhere handy and remove the plug when you leave your bike. To have better security than the datatool provides, again with no battery drain all you need do is to change where the four relevant wires are located and construct a custom shorting link. That way a thief can't use his $3 part to circumvent the circuitry. But if you are stuck at the side of the road or somewhere remote you don't need a plug. Just cut the wires that go from the bikes plug to the unit. Then join 1 and 2 and also join 3 and 5. Hope this helps. sorry can't post pictures. |
