Campsite recommendations
My impression is that there has been a surge in the number of campsites that are recommended in here; perhaps this is related to the arrival of Spring in the north of the world.
For instance, here is just one of the latest examples:- http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...-tallinn-34473 At present these are in the relevant regional forums, for want of somewhere for them to be I guess. A twofold question then: 1.Is there scope for a dedicated forum to recommend places to camp? 2. If the answer to Q1 is no, then should such recommendations appear in the section of the website that has individual forums for recommended accommodation? (thereby being easier to find in the future). ps This website is well on the way to replacing the LP etc:- http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...de-books-34490 With a campsite recommendation section it will be even more complete. |
Re; Q1 - "accommodation" includes camping in my mind - obviously not in everyones!
Will try to clarify on the forums. Accommodation and Camping! = Places to stay / stop! :) Re LP note - interesting - thanks for pointing it out! :) Grant Quote:

Yes, the LP thread references to use of the internet in lieu of paper based guides is interesting. Channel 5 TV uses the term "rough guides" - I don't know, but I would think they will have done some kind of deal with the RG publisher to use that title. Similarly, the BBC have bought into the LP guides. For me, all of this points toward the integration of digital technology with traditional publishing - Grant, someday, you will get an offer that you can't refuse! In the meantime, "Accommodation" works for camping for me, but it hasn't clicked that way in general. I don't know what the universal word is to summarise the options: Stopovers Restplaces ? |
Campsites
Yes please! Put in a campsite area. I've got one to recommend with a great pub nearby too ......

I tend to agree: there is information about specific campsites scattered throughout many threads, with a whole load of more questions about campsites, equally well scattered. Many blogs indicate that camping can be much less reliant on specific, commercial campsites once "the first world" is departed: wild camping. Perhaps there is scope for a camping recommendation section that deals with, say, Europe and North America - see how that goes and then reconsider. |
The "accommodation" forums DO include camping! They're not just for hotels - please see the updated descriptions. :)
I think separating the two is just over the top - way toooo many forums. If we end up with thousands of posts in the accomm forums we can eventually split into hotel and camping if that makes sense, but for now the numbers aren't that high that it's hard to find something. They're also sorted by location, so if you need SOMEWHERE to stay you have a choice of camping or hotel, without having to look in two places. Does that make sense? (Just 'cause it does to me doesn't mean it does to anyone else :innocent:) |
Yes - accomodation makes sense ...
I'd like "free camping" implying no fee .. wild camping may incure a fee .. in some places.. In NSW Australia the "State Forests" well some of them .. have camping and most sites are free. In Queensland Austalia the "Stock Routes" have free camping .. Find out where these are is not easy .. most are hidden away - no signs on teh main roiads .. I suppose this keeps the numbers down :) -------------------- Why should they be all together? When I get towards teh end of teh day - I look for somewhere to stay .. If the weather is not good I like shealtered accomodation. If the weather is good and I'm in the country side I prefer camping. But I'll take what ever is avalible in a pinch .. so it is handy to have everything for place X listed at once.. |
Grant, what about a HUTS section, Horizons Unlimited Travel Stops. It could include Campsites, hotels and B&B's even cafe's and good pull ins with toilets.

Just follow the guide ... don't wander off the beaten path.

Now you want to include stoping places? Where has the adventure gone? |
You make your own adventure. I don't use the current forum I just find a campsite when I get to the end of the day but others like to plan more. I eat when I camp and have nothing all day, others may want to stop for lunch. Admittedly there are plenty of sites for that already so maybe you're right. This is my favourite.

Amazing how many terms there are to cover the same thing. :) (To me "wild camping" is absolutely free / no charge - you're in the middle of nowhere and there's no one to collect. "wild" comes from "wilderness" to me as a Canadian) |

Restaurants - not a bad idea. |
please have a look at the changes made to the Recommend forum - hows that? ?c?

How about the list of countries:- PITA to change, but in place of "bike friendly accommodation in XYZ", "bike friendly in XYZ" leaves all those options open. It might encourage posters to include the country in the first place. |
