HU DVD - How to ride around the world - Help!

We are working madly on the new DVD series, and we need a little help from you! ?c?

We're currently struggling :stormy: with titles and subtitles.

One of the problems is making sure any "slang" words translate in all the major English speaking areas - as we have learned, sometimes to our embarrassment, what's perfectly ok in one country is NOT in others! So if something "doesn't translate" for you please say so! Note that short phrases are better than long for a title.

We're happy with the title for the overall series (though we're always open to brilliant ideas!):

"The Motorcycle Adventure Travel Guide"

MAT Guide for short!

DVD One is all about getting inspired, planning routes, where to go, paperwork, what courses to take etc.

Title: "The Motorcycle Adventure Travel Guide"
Working subtitle:
"Inspiration and preparation"

Other choices so far for Subtitle:
"Getting ready"
???

DVD Two is all about choosing the bike, its equipment - panniers, modifications etc, and your own clothing and riding gear.

Title: "The Motorcycle Adventure Travel Guide"
Working subtitle: The bike and kit

Better choices so far for Subtitle:
"Preparing you and your bike"
"Outfitting you and your bike"
"What to take and how to pack it"
"Getting outfitted"
"Bike and gear"
"Bike and equipment"
"Gear up!"
"The kit"
"Essential gear"
"Essential kit"
????

DVD Three is about what happens when you hit the road - what's it like, how do you deal with border crossings and corrupt officials, medical emergencies on the road, shipping the bike, and much more.

Title: "The Motorcycle Adventure Travel Guide"
Working subtitle: "Life on the road"

Other choices so far for Subtitle:
??

By the time you've seen the three, you will know about everything you need to know to ride around the world.

DVD Four is all of the above from the Woman's point of view.

Title: "The Motorcycle Adventure Travel Guide"
Working subtitle: Women's DVD! :)

Other choices so far for Subtitle:
"Birds-eye view"
"Women on the road"
"Motorcycle Adventure Travel for Women"
"Ladies on the Loose"
????

If we use your suggestion, we'll give you a free DVD.

Thanks for your ideas!
Grant and Susan

I don't like "The' in the title as it implise some sort of exclusivity?
Not certain about the 'Adventure' part either .. being picky .. ummm have to think of something else there .. ? Planet Wide? Later .. that may get some better thoughts running away ..

All seems fine to me, 'cept "Birds-eye view", which is UK slang. Pity 'cos it's the funniest. If you do use it, add an apostrophe of possession: bird's.

Getting ready is better than inspiration and preparation. Three reasons. First, because it is more active. Second, latin based words are less friendly, so avoid if possible. Third, titles in most media are there to pull the viewer in rather than to describe, so go for the light touch. It is not a textbook on plate tectonics. And last principle: if in doubt go for brevity. So how about just 'kit' for the second disk? By the same thinking, DVD 3 could happily lose a word: on the road, rather than life on the road - it's also a bit more romantic IMO.

That's how a journalist would approach it anyhow.

Oops - sorry Frank we weren't clear - we're not looking for the chapter titles, but one per DVD subtitle.

Simon, good points, ta. We agree on short - but we tossed in long names to get people thinking.

--------------
With more discussion with others, we seem to be coming around to "The Achievable Dream" for the overall series title,

"Motorcycle Adventure Travel Guide" for the series subtitle

and DVD #'s

1: Get Ready
2: Gear up
3: On the Road
4: Ladies on the Loose

That's our current "working titles" - still looking for more suggestions / ideas! :)

thanks!

1. Dreams and Planning.
2. Preparation (Bike, Equipment & Self).
3. Once started. OR After the Off.
4. Girls' advantages.

or

1. Dreams to Decisions.
2. Decision to The Off.
3. The Off to The Return
4. To get Girls Ahead. OR Girls Ahead.

Simon
I think it should be Birds'.
We don't want her to think she will be the only Chick out on the road!

mollydog 7 Nov 2008 00:43

Grant,
IMO, your titles and chapter titles are great. Really, it's what is inside that counts. Good editing, music and production value will make or break the
video in the end. Good luck with it!

Only one part I thought might need help is the prep/Kit title.
How about:

Bike Prep & Rider's Kit

Cheers,

Patrick :mchappy:

Ok:
Title:
Motorcycle worldwide travel.

Mortorcycle planet wide trips.

DVD1
A Dream, then Plan.
Planning a Dream.

DVD2
Working to Departure.
Read, Steady.
Must dos.
Must be dones.
Good to do.
Good to be dones.

DVD3
While travelling.
Good travels.
Good travelling.

DVD4
Girls special.

Oh the above suggests (version 2 ;) )
DVD 5 - End of the trip! What to do with the photos, diary, notes and soviners. Getting back to normal 'life' - house, job, old friends...

Life after the trip.

JimOD 7 Nov 2008 14:45

Here's some suggestions:

DVD One

Subtitle: Planning and prepping.

DVD Two

Subtitle1: Stuff.
Subtitle2: Gear to go.

DVD Three

Subtitle: Doing it.

DVD Four

Subtitle: 'er indoors goes outdoors :)

OK Number 4 is just a joke and would only be understood by People in UK, and then only by a certain generation.

I prefer short subtitles as you can tell.

The titles seem to get better by the hour.

Tony P: "Simon I think it should be Birds'. We don't want her to think she will be the only Chick out on the road!"

I see where you're going Tony, but the the phrase implies just one bird. So: take a bird's eye view of it. If plural wouldn't it have to be birds' eyes, which isn't too pretty?

Could we try and get a bit more off topic? It's such fun. :)

Grant Johnson 9 Nov 2008 23:41

some good stuff, thanks guys! We're still dithering if anyone has any more ideas!

thanks, Grant

Tony P 10 Nov 2008 10:25

OK -
How about-

1.Stop the dithering and plan.
2.Stop the dithering and prepare.
3.Stop the dithering and go.
4. ? - Sorry, never met an undecided girl!

:wink3:

Jethro 10 Nov 2008 12:00

I'd keep it simple, as previously mentioned it's what's inside that counts. Since the first three are connected in order I'd go for

1. Get ready.
2. Get set.
3. Go.

The idea being getting your adventure out of the starting blocks.

For the final one I'd go for

4. One for the ladies.

Says it all and avoids using any slang.

Hope this helps:cool4:
