Picture galleries
First off, great site, I visit almost daily and feel a bit cheeky suggesting changes!
I have a suggestion that is entirely selfish! I love looking at peoples pix and could spend ages just toggling through pix to inspire me! I am also a member of a climbing forum and people can have little galleries of pix which other people can view. The latest pix from everyone are put up each day so regular viewers can just check out that days pix. Perhaps something similar on the Hubb would be good? Maybe pix could be cross referenced in terms of location and subject matter (people/landscape/riding), so you could just do a search for pix of, say, Libya? You could even have a competition each month for the best photo (with kudos the prize!) I'm a firm believer in a picture being worth a thousand words! I confess to being a computer donkey so have no idea how difficult this would be to set up! Matt |
Thanks Matt,
You'll be pleased to know that IS in planning stages, but it all takes time - and money. As you may know we have had a super busy summer, what with selling up in Canada and moving to the UK, plus all the meetings, and everything else. So give us some time and it will come. Also of course, the more members we have, (see http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/store/ ) the quicker it will come, because we'll be able to pay for it! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif Let me know the climbing forums address - maybe they have something slicker/cheaper/easier than what I'm thinking of. Grant,
I'm sure you've mentioned the possibilty of using v.bulletin in the past? How about that in conjunction with Smugmug for the ease of posting photos? www.advrider.com is user friendly. |
Hi Grant,
Great to hear its on it's way! The climbing forum is 'UKClimbing.com'. By the way, on that forum you can give peoples pix a mark out of five. Not sure if that's such a good idea, it just seems to cause acrimony! Matt |
vBulletin cometh... but not smugmug.
I have nothing against advrider, but see no point in sending them money to help support their site, when we can use it! (Smugmug and advrider is same owners.) We will use an in-house open source technology. We are generally committed to open source, and all in-house so we have control and aren't relying on someone else's system continuing to run - or going out of business, and with it all our content. Matt, thanks, I'll check out the forum - and I agree - no ratings are needed. |
Grant:
Great news, good to know it is comming SOON. You can count with my membership fee, that´s my 2 cents, for support to the new Webpage. Followers are welcome! MoroCycler |
How does the membership thing work? Do I just buy a T-Shirt or something at the membership rates and I'm a member from then on? Sorry to be thick.
Matt ps: have bought a t-shirt at normal rates as a temporary figurative slap on the back gesture to Grant and Susan! This site makes the whole trip thing seem so much more possible! |
Matt,
Don't worry about the thick part http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif It IS a little confusing because nothing is REQUIRED or is a definite fee for anything. Short explanation: The site costs a lot to run, US$250 a month just for the hosting, and everything else costs money too, like the computer that does nothing but back everything up every night, sop we don't lose any posts if the server goes down. Plus this is my FULL time job - 7 days a week... So, we need some income - advertising is the ideal, but most motorcycle companies are notoriously cheap - and slow to embrace this strange new internet thing - so it's not enough, though we greatly appreciate the ones that do get it, and do support us - and we hope you'll visit them and let them know why you're there. The meetings help, and donations via memberships help a lot too. Our current annual income is still nowhere near what I could get at a regular job, but we hope someday it will be. So since memberships aren't "required" it's all purely voluntary. You can buy a member t-shirt, a gold member t-shirt, and ideally renew your membership annually. Note that a membership is nominally US$ 20 a year - that's about what your average magazine subscription costs per year, and I don't think anyone will dispute that HU is worth at least as much as any magazine out there! See the Store/Souk link on the left for more details and how to buy goodies like t-shirts, mugs etc, and just memberships if you really don't need anything else. We greatly appreciate your support! Without it, there wouldn't be a website. Grant and Susan |
re ps - thanks Matt! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey Grant,
What is the status of being able to host pictures? I've been thinking of opening a Smugmug account but would rather give the money to HU! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Ekke, we're working on it - but it's a few months away... http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/frown.gif
I like www.flickr.com, or write me direct and we can sort something out here for you for now. Members get special privileges, including posting of photos http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Thanks Grant,
I just joined Flickr, now to try attaching an image to a post... http://static.flickr.com/22/91608604_b81495b23e.jpg Let us know how it goes with hosting on HU! |
You can post inline photos in any message. Click on the UBB Code link to the left of the message reply box to read the UBB instructions but the relevant part is pasted below. For some reason photos never got popular here. There are also no travelogue threads either, althouh there are tons of travel blogs in the story section. I think part of it is just the informative nature of the site.
To add a graphic within your message, just encase the URL of the graphic image as shown in the following example (UBB Code is in red). http://www.prime-web.com/Ultimate20/tline.gif In the example above, the UBB Code automatically makes the graphic visible in your message. Note: the "http://" part of the URL is REQUIRED for the [img] code. Also note: some UBB forums may disable the [img] tag support to prevent objectionable images from being viewed. ------------------ Brooklyn Dakar http://motorcycleramblings.blogspot.com/ Photos http://www.jacobsherman.com/ "This is the story of America. OK, let's try that then:

For a second there I thought "Man, that guys got the campest top-box I've ever seen!
