Right column code update

We've been working on cleaning up the look of the HUBB and widening the main body so you can post bigger pictures, and have rolled out the changes.

If the page is narrow, and the left column - the description and title of each Forum is squished - very narrow - then you haven't got the update and need to force a refresh in your browser.

ANY time you think you see weird issues on a page, on ANY website, forcing a refresh is a good thing to ensure you have all the latest code and settings.

To do so, hold down the shift OR ctrl key, and click the refresh button on your browser, OR Ctrl R, OR on Macs, Command R

Any problems let me know! :)

Ah! that's better.

glad you like it! :)

it's been generally bugging my ass - getting programmers to do what you want in any semblance of timely is - in a typically Canadian understated tone - :taz: difficult.

Not quite done yet, one step at a time. :)

Not working for me.

Not sure what the deal is. I have a MacBook Air, any other suggestions.
Thanks,
Ride safe all,

Hi,

Sorry are you having a problem or just wondering what the change is?

If you aren't able to force a refresh, try first holding down the command key and clicking the refresh button n your browser, or last try, try clearing your browser cache, that should do it.

It should look like this:

It does not matter to me. At the resolution I use the right column is off the screen anyway :)

Grant Johnson 9 Mar 2014 00:23

So long as it works! :)

Do have a look at the right hand column on occasion, there might be something you're interested in. ;)

The page is now 1280 pixels wide, which 90%+ of all computers have now (depending on whose stats you read) so the main body is 900 or so, and the right column is off screen on the smaller screens. Since it's impossible to be perfect, that's the best we can do for now! :)

width: 100%;

Mezo, thanks for the thought - I wish it were that easy! We USED to do that - many years ago. When screens were all of a reasonable size, like really big was 1280 wide and 800 wide was the norm. Now, with a 1920 wide screen, forcing a web page to max width truly sucks - the text is very difficult to read when it's one huge long line full screen. Newspapers use narrow columns for a reason, and web pages do to a point too - mostly.

Ideally, all web page text would be in a column about 400 pixels wide for the easiest reading. However, though you can do it with CSS now, it's HARD - and making forum software work with that is nigh to impossible. And, everyone wants to put in photos, which makes it even harder! Finally when you also have to deal with narrow screens on mobile, it's a nightmare to make picture element and graphics work reasonably well.

Also, trying to get all the elements like menus etc to look good at all those resolutions is way hard. You'll notice that most major websites are a fixed width.

Anyway, it's now working pretty well. And that's where we're staying for the next two years, until our next major upgrade.

hope all that makes sense!

Grant, when you talk about screen sizes, you are talking at resolution pixels count. I buy a biggish screen 22" so at a reasonable resolution the text on EVERYTHING is big enough for me to read. When websites cram too much onto 1920 pixels it just gets too small. I run my screen at 1152 x 864 in 4:3 shape. That is as high a resolution I can comfortably use. I would prefer it to be at 1024 x 768.
The other thing is I live too far away from a telephone exchange to get broadband, so I detest those web pages that continuously send video or changing graphic advertisements.

Yes, I understand that. Don't forget you can just use the browsers zoom or windows zoom too. Both work very well today, especially compared to the old days. I have a mouse with a spare button I use just for zoom - click and it's doubled - easy!

I assume you're not slating us for that? We don't do instant play video period, and never will - you always choose when to play video. Our banner ads - moving - are simple animated gifs and are very tiny in size - smaller than the average photo.

hope that helps!
