Tapatalk or Forum Runner?

Hi,

Quick poll - which do you want to see us implement:

Tapatalk or ForumRunner?

Forum Runner integrates well with vBulletin, Tapatalk just does it's thing.

Forum Runner is free to me, or for a branding free version US$599, Tapatalk is also free to me but includes ads, or 799 for a version with no ads.

Price to you:

Android App Store:
Tapatalk is 2.99
Forum Runner is either free (read-only, can't post) or 2.09.

Apple App store:
Tapatalk is 4.99
Forum Runner is either free (read-only) or 1.99

Any thoughts / comments appreciated!

ilpo 3 May 2012 05:19

Neither, simple www is enough with laptop and Android.

Chris of Japan 3 May 2012 05:29

Is there any major functional difference? Or is it just a matter of price? :confused1:
If it is just price, cheaper is better!

Grant Johnson 3 May 2012 05:30

That's what I'm asking users - I don't use either, don't even own a smartphone, so it's up to you guys! I know some of you use these apps, and have been asking for something for some time, so now's the time to decide :) ?c?

TurboCharger 3 May 2012 07:39

Seriously I think the most important thing is having redesigned the website to consolidate the inforamtion and make it easier for navigation. This has already gone a long way to making the mobile experience a lot better! :thumbup1:

IMHO, there is not a big community that will pay for an APP to connect to HU/HUBB from their smartphones. :mchappy:

When you say some of us have been asking for some time. Can you give an order of magnitude?

Save money, drink beer.

mattcbf600 3 May 2012 09:39

Hi Grant - I use TapTalk a great deal on the iPhone - and whilst I do, and can struggle with the www page - TapTalk does rather make keeping up to date easier.

To give you an example when ABR introduced TapTalk I found myself checking the forum and replying about twice a day rather than about twice a week... I'd love to be able to do that on HUBB - the very heart of Adventure Biking.

m

P.S. TapTalk also has a free version of their iPhone app that is arguably better than the paid version .

Farkles 4 May 2012 14:33

There are two people in my household (including myself) who would probably use Tapatalk (or Forum Runner) if it was available. I don't have any real technical insight in terms of which is better -- Forum Runner or Tapatalk but I suspect that Tapatalk is more ubiquitous.

Besides the ads, it sounds like the major advantage to the paid (server side) editions is around Google Analytics and customization, including the client side app. Do I really require a customized app which only connects to the HUBB (at a fairly high price to you guys/HU)? Nope. I would happily pay a couple of bucks for the Tapatalk or Forum Runner app (actually already purchased the Tapatalk a while back hoping that I could use it for the HUBB).

As long as either app doesn't negatively effect "things" -- create security holes, create site instability, use a lot of resources or add significant admin overhead (i.e. Grant's time), I think a mobile app would a great addition. For those who are not interested, they don't have to use it.

***

I would like to say thank you for all of the work you have put in here. The new site looks great. Being a sysadmin, I know what it is like being "behind the scenes" and rarely receiving acknowledgement for making things work...well!.

TravellingStrom 8 May 2012 16:38

My two cents worth

I already have Tapatalk installed with 4 other forums already available when I am on the road. I can only say that I have no issues with this APP but it does make for quicker access, than trying to unload the lappy and getting that powered up etc etc

There will probably be a number of other people who already have an APP installed, I know I won't pay for another, I prefer to consolidate

Cheers
TS

So far there is little demand it seems for either Tapatalk OR Forum Runner!

If you're interested, please vote - I need to know whether it's worth the effort!

I don't know TapaTalk or ForumRunner but I know that the HUBB doesn't work on my phone anymore (Nokia E72).
Personally I don't like the idea of having to install software to make a forum work on my phone. The latest upgrade looks nice, but for me it means less functionality and fewer visits... :(

Sorry to hear that - we tested on Android and Iphone and it works fine on them. What OS is your Nokia running?

ANY other phone issues ANYONE please tell us! We only have so many phones to test on! :)

The OS is Symbian, it runs out of memory.

Hmmm, interesting - do you get the full blue menu bar, and "Quicklinks black bar, plus "mega-menu" or just the full blue menu bar and "quicklinks" menu?

Mega-menu is obvious on a regular computer - big dropdown menu full-width of the "Home / Get Inspired / Get Ready etc" blue menu bar, with a one row black menu bar just below the blue Menu bar, and above the mega-menu.

That black bar is the "Quicklinks" and should be what you get on mobile - NOT the full dropdown.

If you're getting the mega-menu I need to know - you shouldn't, so if you do, we're not "browser sniffing" correctly and need to fix it.

thanks, Grant

TheWarden 20 May 2012 21:24

tapatalk for me but only because I already have it

Fantastic Mister Fox 20 May 2012 23:44

My experience of mobile web browsing is that it isn't particularly fast and tap a talk does seem to run faster on my phone.

Grant,

HUBB behaves on my Samsung Galaxy as countless other BB´s - I need to zoom in, out, scroll etc. to read one single post. That´s one of the probs one hates when standing on a border crossing in the rain with minimal signal and hoping to find a quick answer to an imminent problem. So if Tapatalk or ForumRunner will eliminate this, it´s a good feature to implement.
Which version comes cheaper to us out here should not matter in the end, as I assume many of us use other BB´s as well which use either of the above. We´re talking a couple of bucks for the user only, anyways. Lesser use of bandwidth / traffic will be more user-friendly to those of us who have to rely on data transfer via phone connection in remote areas, so bf&u hi-res "sponsor" advertisements with naked girls may be cheaper for you but expensive for the user, so depending on the size/frequency of the ads it may in the end be a bad choice.
Cheers
Chris

Senno 11 Jul 2012 20:03

I use Tapatalk currently but I'm more than happy to give Forum Runner a blast if that's chosen.

Both are very useful to avoid the zooming/scrolling about stuff mentioned in the last post

becsta 19 Jul 2012 06:46

I have just started using tapatalk and so far reckon it is great I have 4 forums on it at present and I now read and post a lot more on those forums because of the ease to access them.

sparco 19 Jul 2012 09:25

i use both, both are good, tapatalk is a little bit cleaner , better overview of threads , so go for it, this forum definetly needs one of those !

rbcathlos 11 Aug 2012 15:32

Tapatalk makes forum reading much easier on my Motorola Razr Maxx. The format of www. doesn't fit the screen making it difficult to read. The smart phone was purchased to streamline my packing by carrying one device instead of carrying a separate phone, computer, camera, mp3 player, chargers for all the above and reading material.

I have no experience with Forum Runner.

Austin 11 Aug 2012 16:55

I use Tapatalk on my iPhone a lot. I access 5 forums regularly and to be honest prefer to access those forums via Tapatalk than my Laptop's browser. Accessing the forums via 3g is a genuine prospect and a pleasant experience compared with browsing using Safari (or equivalent) and 3g.

I never even notice adverts on tapatalk, which on a couple of the forums are a PITA when going via the laptop browser.

No experience of any other mobile browser though.

Toyark 20 Aug 2012 19:03

Tapatalk 2 on Android
Are we 'there' yet? !!

Grant Johnson 20 Aug 2012 19:10

not yet! It's going to be at least a month, more likely two. I'm off to CanWest tomorrow, then surgery immediately I get back, and I'll be out for a few weeks. Just trying to keep up right now is tough, much less add in and test new features. :( And it's going to be worse over the next month of course.
It's high on the list!

Toyark 20 Aug 2012 19:29

sounds like a few 'ouches' in the wind
Head up, think of it like having to ride over mont blanc on Yam serow - clutch out then wring the nuts off it (if you'll pardon the pun! :blushing:) and you'll get over it:clap: and come out sleeker, faster and happier- Fingers crossed.

*Touring Ted* 21 Aug 2012 17:26

I've just bought TAPTALK on my phone. I've been holding off as £1.99 seemed too expensive lol.

Just given it a whirl on the ABR forum and it works GREAT. Much much easier to keep up to date.

For anyone who hasn't used tapatalk, using your phone browser is NO WAY as simple or fast. I have a nice Android phone and forums are still a total pain on it without Taptalk.

It would be totes amazeballs if Horizons was supported on it too. :smartass:

monsieur 22 Aug 2012 12:46

I use tapatalk on my iphone4 for several forums and it works brilliantly well - so much better, quicker, easier than using a web browser or safari.
If HUBB was available on tapatalk I know I'd frequent the site a lot more than I currently do :thumbup1:

iainnic 8 Oct 2012 22:37

Tapatalk every time for me - works very well

Wheelie 9 Oct 2012 20:33

I've got Tapatalk, and I only use it for forums that I use frequently. I do think this is a route to go eventually, but I think it is a bit early as the adoptation among the general population is still low.

Everyone that visits the www on a pad or smartphone will get prompted about the app every time, and for many this will be just annoying if they don't have the app or don't want to get it.

If the HUBB was apped, I would use it. But my gut feeling is that it will be an added benefit to a few like me, and a nuisance to many. Maybe in a year or three...

*Touring Ted* 15 Jan 2013 18:05

Any update on this..

I'd LOVE to see the hubb on Tapatalk.

A lot of people only travel with smartphone's these days. Wifi in a cafe and HUBB on tapatalk would be a blessing.

Hellboy 15 Jan 2013 18:10

I would not mind at all if Tapatalk was implemented. Great app that makes things much easier when on a smartphone. We run Tapatalk on several forums I´m involved in and the installation is easy. 1 hour at the most. Did it on a forum where I am admin. No problems at all and it is great for smartphone users. MUCH easier navigation around the forum than using a regular browser.

My two cents.

Sincerely//Jan

Farkles 22 Jan 2013 17:06

I have been following some threads on advrider -- trip posts (Jammin' Jay) and some gear related threads -- and I must say that Tapatalk is very cool. I am actively making some decisions on some topics related to some of these threads so I am getting updates as they come in.

I having been using Tapatalk on an older Android phone and 7" Google Nexus tablet (now cracked and not usable :() and Tapatalk is (was) very usable on both. My phone is on the older side (read: sucks) and the web browser crawls. Tapatalk, at least for subscribed threads, makes the phone feel useful again and more readable than trying to use the browser version of that site.

As some context, I work in computers, spend too much time on computers and too much time dealing with my phone (work related matters) so I often find that I have little patience for things like Facebook, Twitter, etc. That said, I am almost always excited when I see my Tapatalk notifications come in as I have subscribed to threads that truly interest me and want to keep up to date. And I get to see them with minimal fuss.

My CDN$0.02.

Adam

Senno 26 Jan 2013 21:46

Nothing new, just asking if there's been any advance on this yet? I search for the HUBB now and then on Tapatalk but haven't found it yet.

Grant Johnson 27 Jan 2013 23:13

Hi all, Tapatalk is getting higher on the list! Soon-ish, with any luck and assuming testing doesn't reveal any nasty surprises!

nicola_a 28 Jan 2013 21:51

Tapatalk is really great and I miss not having the HUBB on Tapatalk.

Grant Johnson 17 Feb 2013 02:47

Tapatalk IS LIVE on the HUBB now - I think!

Poor installation system, registration etc at my end. Wouldn't work with IE or Firefox, ended up using OPERA!

So now we'll see what happens - do you get the Tapatalk notification? I suspect it will take a little while for it all to roll through Tapatalks servers, so let us know if you get it and it works!

Enjoy - I hope!

Photo attach - good - we're using the native HU vBulletin attach, not the Tapatalk attach, so your images are stored here, not on Tapatalks servers, so less risk of loss etc! :)

Annoying after the 100th occurance

Tapatalk (whatever that is - I don't have anything to do with it, so far as I know) keeps telling me that it's security certificate expired today, 15th Oct.

Maybe today is its' birthday or something like that, and it needs to tell everyone?

The announcement of the expiry came up with 3 options: accept, reject or help.
As long as I continued to reject the expired certificate, it continued to tell me about it, via the same dialogue box. The help "button" did the obvious thing and told me about security certificates - much more than I really want to know!
The dialogue box popped up every time I moved around the website, so after this happened dozens of times yesterday I decided to give in and pressed the accept button - now I have accepted the security "risk" it has stopped telling me about it! :rolleyes2:

Today it is working fine and dandy with either Firefox or Opera and all on a normal computer, not a tablet nor a phone or whatever.

Sorry for the scarey post!
