text archives and posting via email
My girfriend and I will be amongst the lucky fews carrying a mini laptop and a sat-phone for web access, but other people who experienced internet cafes in Africa sharing a single 28K line for 12 machines might be interested too...
It would be nice to have a weekly text-only archive of all the messages posted during the last 7 days accessible through FTP. This way we could launch a single request, download the file, close the connection and read the messages at our own pace. Example: ftp://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/...2002_04_20.txt Accessorily, an interface could also allow us to download an archive containing all the threads that have been modified within a particular forum during the past week. Example: ftp://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/...2002_04_20.txt Finally, it would be nice to be able to post a message by email. Example: mailto://sahara_travel_forum@ www.horizonsunlimited.com?subject=mysubject:myuser name:mypassword This system would allow travellers on the road a fast and cheap way to post and keep track of the messages on the bulletin board. ------------------ Pierre Saslawsky http://www.geocities.com/skypie999/bikes/ |
Pierre,
Good ideas! BUT - there's always a but - that would require serious hacking of the Perl code that runs the HUBB, and quite frankly we have neither the time nor the skills to do it. BUT + we are considering a change to a different BB software, and will keep in mind your comments, as they would indeed be good. For now, IF we can find a good coder with free/very cheap time on his hands (if that isn't an oxymoron) we might be able to do something simpler - in addition to the "Click Here To View Today's Active Topics (all public forums)" perhaps we could do a "this weeks topics" to speed things up a little. We are averaging 30-40 posts a day, so this might get a little long, but would at least make it easy to browse through and pick what's of interest. Any Perl coders out there? Comments? Thanks Pierre, ------------------ Grant Johnson Seek, and ye shall find. ------------------------ One world, Two wheels. www.HorizonsUnlimited.com |
