Veteran Traveller
Hi Grant,
This Veteran Traveller tag after a 100 posts is a misnomer. Not sure I want to become a Veteran or a misnomer. Can we have a choice on this tag, maybe it should be Veteran Poster. What I am trying to say is has nothing to do with travel if you reach 100 posts. Steve |
A choice may not be a good idea. Every poster could call himself a veteran traveler then.
Maybe it is better to just use (contributing) member or guest. If you want to do something with the number of postings, make it "regular poster" or something like that. I agree with Steve that being a veteran traveler has nothing to do with the number of posts. I do most posting from behind my desk at work or at home :-) |
Ditto
I had exactly the same feeling as Steve when I went from Newbie to Veteran in what felt like a couple of weeks - only because I had a whole shed-load of questions about my very poorly bike and I know "not a lot" about such things.
Ultimately though, I don't care what you call me!! Dave Now I have read the last week of input to this thread:- 1. I am too old to be a Veteran (Vintage??) 2. Who really cares what the title is: number of posts are on the right, so drop the whole title thing on the left (sounds like a political slogan, but you can see what I mean) - life is too short for this discussion to persist. 3. I still don't care what I am called, if names have to be attached. |
Fixed it for me, Steve.
Anyway... if you're not a veteran traveller I don't know what someone would have to go through to earn the title! Tim |

Veteran poster
I'd like to second Jan's comment about veteran posters. I did a lot of travelling years ago and then reached a time when my longest journey was the daily commute to work (if you don't want to spend time with your kids, don't have them). The kids are now old enough to be left for a while and I'm starting to travel again, and planning a big trip for when the youngest is settled enough to be left for months. What this all means is that I don't really regard myself as a traveller at present (although I AM old enough to compete as a veteran in most sports).
[thanx for the site by the way - whenever I start getting fed up with the daily grind at work, I visit HU and work on another detail of the big trip. I then go home and tell Mrs MarkE about the addition to the plan, and she sympathises with my frustrating day at work] |

The rest cannot. Gotta give the Gold Members some perks! :) As for what the titles SHOULD be - let me know your thoughts - I just used the current as a quick answer to a question on a form when setting it up! give me a few ideas and we'll set up a poll to get everyones preferences. To clarify, based on number of posts, it's currently: Newbie Traveller Veteran Traveller ------------------------- |
Stars?
Maybe leave it as it is but let members rate each others up to 5 stars so it will look like:
Newbie**** or Traveller** or Vetran Traveller*** I am sure I can make a few hundreds useless postings per day and bacame a Veteran Traveller but I won't earn as many stars as a real contributing member. It was just an idea... or "helmets" instead of the stars??? |
newbie
regular poster veteran poster |
Having raised the issue I should offer a (partial) solution, other posts in this thread have helped me clarify what I am thinking.
If Grant decides to issue titles should it be associated with number of posts on the forum or amount of travel experience someone has? If it is how many posts, we already have that indicated as a counter. If the decision is titles are necessary then I think it should be linked to travel experience. Then the question is how you qualify it. I guess one simple way is to acquire a title which is linked to the amount of countries traveled by motorcycle (might feel the need to expand the requirement as we have some 4X4 travelers), and have countries listed in the public profile. Some members have many trips to one area then they may wish to be known as an expert in that area, which could be a country, region or continent. This will probably be my last post for a month because I am off traveling after the HU meeting. Steve |
to veteran or not to veteran, that is the question.......
I would prefer no titles at all.
Does someone else decide how "veteran" you are as a traveler ? Based on what ? Or does someone declare themself veteran ? I wouldn't like either of these choices. If people want to know how experienced I am (or not) as a traveler, they can check my website. I don't need a title. It's not a race who is the most veteran traveler. |
What use is a traveller?
I'm not sure rating anyone's travel experience is particularly useful; is someone who has been around the world east - west and north - south and explored all the remotest areas but is unwilling to offer constructive help deserving of more respect than someone who travels little but always has time to help travellers visiting his home town? (I am not aware of such extremes on HU and the examples are purely hypothetical).
I would go for alexpezzi's suggestion, but perhaps replace "traveller" with "poster" for clarity. By rating comments you would get a true guide as to who is helpfull. I'd sooner see stars as I don't feel comfortable having my helmet rating publically viewed! |
How observant am I?
I've just noticed that I've become a HUBB Regular and there are a couple of veteran HUBBers (this is where you say it was changed weeks ago and I'm a bit slow to notice).
Perfect choice!:thumbup1: |

Good solution Grant. |
