Hello from India

I got to know about Horizons Unlimited while reading the book "Gone Riding" by Dom Giles. I'm from India and currently visiting the US on work. I've been here three weeks and every weekend I've been renting a motorcycle and riding to some place.

I have a blog at DeelipMenezes.com where I post pics and videos of my rides. Here are the posts for the last three rides in the US.

Ride To Cape Cod
Riding The Tail Of The Dragon
Ride To Lake Tahoe

Back home in India I have a 2013 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy and a 2012 Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350.

A couple of months ago I rode my Thunderbird to Marsimik La in the Himalayas, the highest motorable road on the planet, standing at 18,953 feet. You can read about the gory details on my blog series at The Marsimik La Adventure

Deelip

I hope you enjoyed my book! And great to hear that you've found the excellent HorizonsUnlimited website.

Still reading it. I've reached Mexico. :-) The book is wonderfully written and your views on America and Americans happen to match mine perfectly.

Your book is going to keep me good company on my long flight back home to India. In fact, the person sitting next to me on the flight coming in was wondering why I found my Kindle so amusing.

I plan on riding around the world one day. Hopefully sooner than later.

Totally agreed Marcimik La is the highest motorable road as detected and confirmed by my Turkish friend also personally for the second time just a few weeks ago but still Khardung La is announced so by Indian government.

Is there a spesific reason for that?

All the best.

deelip 20 Oct 2014 22:33

Yes, there is a very good reason for that. Khardung La is just north of Leh, a proper city with an airport and hence a popular tourist destination. Marsimik La is right next to the disputed and volatile border with China. You need a government pass to go there and even if you have one, the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) can turn you down if there is trouble brewing on that day. So the India government really don't want a flood of tourists going to Marsimik La and promote Khardung La as the highest motorable road on the planet.

When we reached the last ITBP check post at Phobrang on the way to Marsimik La, we were strictly asked not to go past Marsimik La. They said they would not be held responsible if anything happened to us up there.
